Ways To Organise Your Kitchen

Ikea spice storage in drawers

I’ve always loved organising and decluttering my house (and life). But ever since watching The Home Edit on Netflix it’s about all I can think about. That and why don’t we have The Container Store in the UK?! It would certainly make all of our home organising dreams come true. There are so many ways to organise your kitchen and most of it is down to how much space you have.

We’re very lucky that we designed our kitchen ourselves and had it fitted from new. And of course, we chose trusty Ikea. Having looked at a few kitchen companies we knew Ikea would be the best option for us due to how customisable it was. And the choice of drawers and internal organisation.

Organise your kitchen with internal drawers

If you’re designing your kitchen then make sure you look at hidden internal drawers. Not only do hidden drawers maximize the space inside your drawers but they don’t compromise on the aesthetics. Most of the time you won’t fill a drawer right to the top so there’s wasted space at the top. That’s why on our island we have hidden drawers in all three sections. And two in this wider central section.

If you’re not redesigning your kitchen you can still add additional drawers to your space. These wire pull out baskets can be fit inside existing drawers or cupboards to give you extra space. Or these under shelf baskets just slot over shelves to give you additional storage. These are great for deeper cupboards such as under the sink.

Use internal drawer separators

The biggest piece of advice I have about how to organise your kitchen is to have a home for everything. Don’t just have a utensil drawer where you dump everything, but separate things and have homes. We’re lucky to have a lot of drawers for cutlery, knives, and utensils, but you can easily do something similar. We got the Ikea internal drawer separators as they fit exactly into our space, but there are loads out there you can choose from. Just search on Amazon. Not only will be more organised and neat but you’ll know where to look for things.

Organise your kitchen by maximizing every piece of space

One of the biggest faux pas when it comes to kitchen organisation is not utilising all the space you have. It’s easy if you’re redesigning a kitchen as you can choose the heights of things. Or the number of drawers you want. But if you’ve got your kitchen you want to make sure it works best for you.

Plate stands will help you stack your dishes better without the strain of trying to get out the one thing at the bottom you need. While wire racks can double the amount of space in a cupboard and stop you from having to stack tins and cans on top of one another.

A shelf mug holder will slot over a shelf and allow you to hang your mugs for easy reach and to use up space. Baking trays and chopping board racks will help keep things organised and contained to one area of your kitchen.

Internal drawer storage

Use baskets and dividers in drawers and on shelves

Being able to separate out certain items and tuck them away in their own basket makes finding things so much easier. For the example above I have all my seasoning packets in one space so they don’t fall over or get lost in my drawer. I use them to separate out snacks, keep together smaller baking items and so much more. This is especially useful if you have shelves as you can easily pullout a whole basket rather than rummaging around trying to find something. We opted for drawers everywhere we could to try and avoid this issue. But most kitchens do have shelves so the dividers and baskets can help.

Organise your kitchen with wall display cabinets

Use free space on your kitchen walls to add more storage solutions. Things like these display cabinets by Luminati can be ideal for kitchen organisation. Get ones that mount to the wall, effectively giving you protected shelving.

The key here is that the display cabinets are seethrough, meaning you see everything inside. It’s a wonderful way to store glassware or plates – as well as being ideal for any spices and cooking ingredients.

Isn’t it annoying when you’re trying to find the small tub of paprika to use in your recipe? This idea makes it easier for you to spot without aimlessly rooting around in a kitchen cupboard for ages!

Oxo kitchen storage with labels

Organise your kitchen by decanting certain items

I was doing this way before I discovered The Home Edit when I got sent some items from the Oxo Pop collection*. The thing I love about these containers is that they’re airtight so you can store anything you want in them. But they’re so easy to open with a touch push on the top. If you’re baking and your hands are covered in ingredients this is a godsend to avoid making as much mess. I have all of my baking things like caster sugar, flours, brown sugar, icing sugar, etc in these containers. But also other things like sweetener, cornflour, and pasta.

I like being able to see exactly what I have so I know when I’m running low. The next thing I’m working on is uniform containers so it looks aesthetically pleasing. But that’s for further down the line.

This reminds me I need to make time to go through my drawers again. I have two that somehow always get cluttered up.

I have a relatively small kitchen and organizing inside drawers and inside the cabinets really made my life so much more easy and enjoyable. i absolutely hate chaos and spoons mixed with knifes and such. Love cute boxes and baskets for inside big drawers !

I think my kitchen is fairly organised. I have a place stacker and internal drawers. I could do with more space for appliances though

These sound like some great ideas, I have to admit our kitchen is so unorganised, I could do with thinking it through a bit more.

I like the idea of being super organised with great storage especially in the kitchen but can never quite master it. Thanks for these useful tips, really must invest in internal drawer separators as my drawers are a mess.

I have recently discovered under the shelf baskets and they have changed my life! I also have suction cup baskets stuck to the inside of my larder doors which work great for packets. I think they are meant for inside a shower but they work really well!

We designed our kitchen ourselves but I would totally re-design it if we could, I need much more storage!

That’s something we really pushed for, way more storage than we need at the moment as we know in time we’ll need it all x

I’m loving the Home Edit too, I discovered it just a couple of weeks ago. I also use the OXO storage jars and they’re great, I love the suction lids. Mich x
