Decorating Our New House For Christmas

Fake Christmas tree in the kitchen diner

Looking at the positive side of 2020 this year sees us spend our first Christmas in the new house. It’s not exactly how we would have imagined it. I had been pretty excited about hosting family and friends around, but there’s nothing we can do about that. But the one thing I’ve been so excited to do is decorating our new house for Christmas. I’m a huge Christmas decoration fan anyway and love to cover the place with as much Christmas cheer as I can.

Up until this year, I’ve lived either with my parents or in a flat. So real estate for potential decorations is much higher this year. I knew that I had the space to do a lot more this year. Although with shops being shut in November I would have liked more lights outside, that’s always something for next year.

Garland on the stairs

Decorating in the kitchen/ diner

As we’re lucky to have quite a large space in the kitchen diner we decided to use our fake Christmas tree in this space. I only bought this tree a few years ago and it’s such good quality with a fake as it’s got quite a lot of branches which I really love. This tree is probably the most cohesive in terms of colour and patterning. And as you can see we went for purple and silver on this tree. And I really like how it’s come out. Over the years I’ve collected quite a lot of hanging decorations so it’s nice to have the space to display them. As we have wooden flooring in this space I added a fur throw underneath just to protect the floor, but I think it looks quite nice. Oh, and these presents are all prop-presents and not real. I just wrapped up a few random boxes to make it look pretty.

Unlike when I was in the flat we have a staircase so I picked up this red garland which has fairy lights in it from Amazon to put along the staircase. I’m still not sure about the exact positioning but it really brings to life the room. Naturally, I have tinsel in any space I can such as my sideboard and around photos.

Real Christmas tree in the living room

Having a real Christmas tree in the living room

Luke has had a real Christmas tree at home every single year, but I’ve never had one before. So we decided as our main tree in the living room that we’d go for a real one. I actually ordered it online a few months ago from Christmas Tree Direct to ensure we got the right size. And it was where Luke’s parents got theirs from last year so we knew the quality was good. As someone who hadn’t had a real tree before we picked up an awesome tree stand that holds quite a lot of water. And a beautiful light-up tree mat that looks so beautiful in the dark.

Sass and Belle Christmas decorations

For the decorating on this tree, we opted for the very traditional red and gold. Although this tree has a lot more sentimental ornaments like ones we’ve had personalised in Edinburgh and our initials etc. It also has a selection of new decorations that I picked up this year including a stunning gingerbread house* (RRP £10) and woodland fox* (RRP £8.50) from Sass and Belle. All of their Christmas decorations are 3 for 2 if you’re looking to pick up anything extra for this year.

Mantlepiece Christmas decorations

The rest of the living room decorations

One of the things I was most excited about was having a fireplace and mantlepiece. I’ve always seen people’s photos of beautiful setups with stockings hanging and now we have our own. The main features of the mantle place display include these two beautiful cashmere stockings* that Harrow and Green kindly sent me last Christmas. Then there’s the stunning Holly bouquet of dried flowers from Three Sisters Farm which I hope will be part of my Christmas decorations for years to come.

In the living room, I have another garland around the TV stand, and just random decorations, candles, and tinsel dotted around. Thankfully we haven’t gone overboard but I do think I’ll be keeping my eyes open for more to add to the collection for next year.

Small Christmas tree in my office

The final part of my decorating for Christmas is this 2 foot Christmas tree which stands in my office. As I’m working from home I wanted the room to feel a little festive, and this tree holds some of my favourite decorations. Generally, they’re ones that mean something to me but not to Luke. Like my Nightmare before Christmas bits, skulls or a bauble with my name on it. But when I’m working all I need to do is turn around to feel festive.

How are you decorating for Christmas this year?

Rhian, it looks so beautiful! We’ve gone mad this year and I love it so much.

Definitely going to buy some more bits in the sale this year for next.

Enjoy your first Christmas in your new home x

Thank you! I’m planning on doing exactly the same thing as you and buy some more decorations in the sales like lights and ornaments and garlands so I can go even more OTT next year x

I love how the stairs look, they’re so pretty. I bought an artificial tree this year and have been unhappy about that since 5 minutes after buying. The cats are enjoying it though.

    • Rhian Westbury says:

That’s a shame that you aren’t happy with your artificial tree. Although I find them hit and miss. I spent quite a bit on mine like £80 to get a proper bushy one to look like a real tree as much as possible x

  3. Georgina says:

Your decorations look lovely, esepcially the staircase. It’s a shame you’re not happy with your artificial tree but you can always get a real one next year.

Love your decorations, the stockings on the fireplace are lovely. We put out our decorations early and it really put a smile on my face… Much needed after this year.

I enjoy decorating but our puppy is being a right pain, constantly pulling the lights and tinsel off our tree!

Oh no that’s a shame. We’re hoping to have kittens next year and I’m fully expecting the same thing then x
