Installing a Loft Ladder in Your Home

So, how do you actually go about installing a loft ladder? Let’s take a look…

What you’ll need

Here is a list of tools that you’ll to successfully install your loft ladder:

Step 1 – Choosing your loft ladder

The first thing you’ll need to do before installing your loft ladder is to decide what ladder you’re actually going to install. Like we mentioned above, this will all depend on your preferences and your home, with several factors influencing which ladder you ultimately opt for.

Choose from sliding loft ladders, concertina loft ladders, or staircases in a choice of wooden or aluminum materials.

Step 2 – Creating your loft hatch

Once you have selected the specific ladder you’d like to install, the next thing you’ll need to do is create the hatch where you’ll be accessing your loft. To help make this easier, be sure to follow these points:

1. Select the best position for your hatch to be installed.
2. Measure the size of your ladder to ensure your loft hatch will be big enough to fit it. The hatch will need to be big enough to fit the ladder’s frame with a small gap all the way around the edge for movement.
3. Once you have your hatch position selected, drill a small practice hole through the ceiling so that you can identify where your hatch will be. Go into your loft and take a look at the selected position from above to confirm its suitability.
4. Once you’re happy with your hatch’s position, you can proceed with cutting your new hatch. There are plenty of specific guides online that you can find and follow that explain this in more detail and even help with enlarging an existing hatch to suit a new ladder.

Step 3 – Installing the loft ladder

Now that your new hatch is created, you can install your loft ladder. But before you do this, you’ll need to add some battens to support the ladder’s frame. Do this by nailing a length of wood to either side of the opening, ensuring the battens are securely fixed and level with one another.

Next, you’ll need to place the ladder assembly in the opening, positioned so that it is supported by the battens. Make sure that the frame is flush with the ceiling. Before moving on to secure your ladder, try opening and closing it to confirm the position is suitable.

Step 4 – Securing your ladder in place

Once you’re happy with the position of your ladder and how it works, you’re ready to secure it in place. Start by drilling two holes on each side of the frame, for larger frames, you may need to drill an additional hole.

After you’ve done this, you can begin to screw your ladder into place, ensuring it is fully secure before attempting to use it. Depending on the type of loft ladder, you may also need to cut the ladder’s lower section to the correct length of your floor.
If all is well after this point, you now have a shiny (unless it’s wooden) new loft ladder that you can use to gain quick and safe access to your attic – perfect!
