Climbing the career ladder is never easy. Everyone wants to succeed and grow. And when the going gets tough, you may be left feeling like a small fish in a big pond. Developing your skills to earn those precious promotions can seem like climbing the Everest of success. But career progression doesn’t need to feel impossible!

If you want to invest time into yourself and your goals, check out these three top tips for career development and make your dreams a reality.

Develop Your Career By Setting SMART goals

Setting goals is easy in theory. But if your goals are exclusively short-term and non-specific, it makes them only harder to reach.

Start setting yourself some SMART targets to focus your attention, add clarity, and work your way up the ladder of success.

For those unfamiliar, SMART is an acronym that stands for the following five key guidelines of goal-setting: Specific (your goal should give you a clear endgame target to reach for), Measurable (you should be able to track your progress throughout), Achievable (don’t set yourself up for failure!), Relevant (is your goal useful to your life and trajectory right now?) and Time-bound (giving yourself a deadline to work towards can serve as useful motivation in achieving your goal).

Check out this book for more information on smart targets!

Reflect on your goals

Reflect on your goals regularly, and set yourself intervals to assess your progress and

Reflection is important to help you find areas for improvement and acknowledge the work that still needs to be done to reach your potential.

Ask yourself questions like “Am I on track to reach this goal?” “Do I need to re-work this goal at this moment in time?” “What further work needs to be done to help me progress and reach this goal?” Try using the reflection app to monitor these reflections digitally to assess whether you’re on track to achieve the career success you aspire to.

Be honest with yourself. You will only achieve success by honestly looking at goals. And remember that reflection is important not only for the work that is yet to be done, but the work that has been – don’t forget to celebrate your progress along the way!

Develop Your Career Through Education, education, education!

Career success requires you to be constantly ahead of the curve.

Relevant and up-to-date knowledge and training can be the difference between achieving that promotion and being stuck where you currently are. Explore every learning opportunity and never pass up a chance to expand your skillset – employers want to know that you’re passionate and committed to constantly boosting your knowledge and willing to open your mind to new ideas.

Why not try a distance learning degree? It’s easy to boost your CV by adding new strings to your bow and earning new qualifications. ARU Distance Learning offers a huge range of degrees that will help you stand out from other candidates. Check out their range of courses that are flexible in working around your already busy life!
