Five Common Myths About Periods That Might Be Keeping You Down

*This is a guest post about common period myths

I think we all can agree that periods are not the best time of the month. Of course, it goes without saying there are plentiful reasons to be happy when your period finally arrives, but when you are in the middle of it all, it plainly sucks. The fact that even in the 21st century period is still somewhat considered taboo does not make it much better. It affects not only how we feel and talk about menstruation, but it also helps lots of myths to prevail.

Let’s debunk some of them today. Maybe you enjoy your next red days a tiny bit more.

Myth 1. You shouldn’t take a bath

One of the widespread beliefs is that bathing is not advisable as it makes bleeding heavier or can even cause an infection.

While it is true hot water stimulates blood circulation, the light pressure water develops on your skin can actually ease the bleeding. Moreover, staying in warm water relaxes muscles and it is a brilliant way to help fight cramps or even headaches.

Not sure where the belief about infections came from, but believe me it isn’t true. Mother nature is smarter than that. Actually, taking a bath is way more natural (and safe!) than using sanitizers, wipes, or vaginal showers.

Lastly, we all love bubbles or candles and proper time off with ourselves. You can even make this an excuse for a proper pamper day.

Myth 2. You shouldn’t do sports during menstruation

Sorry to disappoint you, but you shouldn’t use periods as an excuse to skip your leg day.

Feeling tired and bloated or having cramps is both common and exhausting, I know. As much as it sounds impossible in the beginning, exercise can make you feel way better. There is clearly no need to push your limits if you don’t feel well. Try doing a simple exercise routine, go for a light jog or embrace yoga. Stretching your muscles leads to fewer cramps, endorphins make cramps less painful. Not to mention that your body will also react to endorphins by boosting your mood – who doesn’t like that.

Lots of sports and activities are excellent for period days, even some we would not normally think about such as swimming. Lots of women don’t feel comfortable in the pool with a wet tampon and rather end up not going. What a shame, because water really helps to relax our muscles and brains. By using a period cup for swimming, you can both feel safe for several hours and stop worrying about annoying tampon strings. Cups are great for other sports too and keep our planet cleaner.

Myth 3. You shouldn’t have sex during period

This might be the most common one on this list and the one that probably steals the most pleasure.

The truth is, having sex is absolutely healthy and normal at any time of the month. If you are longing for some intimate fun, just go ahead. Sex, as any other physical activity, is proved to relieve period cramps. Just imagine all the happy hormones you get! Pro TIP: Use a towel to protect your sheets and then soak it in cold water immediately to get rid of any stains.

As always, only have sex if you feel like it. Just because you can doesn’t mean you have to. Your feelings are the most important in making this decision.

Myth 4. You don’t need to use protection during your period

If you let yourself be guided by the previous advice, also remember you need protection just as during the rest of the cycle.

A lot of women believe that they can’t get pregnant while on period. While your organism is generally less fertile on those days, there is always a slim chance to get pregnant. To make it more confusing, sperm can live in the genitalia tract for up to 5 days. Yep, that means it can live long enough just to be active during ovulation.

Plus, always keep in mind that protection is not only about not getting pregnant. Barrier protection, such as condoms, also protect you from STIs. Hormonal changes during menstruation increase the chance of getting a sexually transmitted infection making you more vulnerable. It’s important to get yourself to an std clinic if you are concerned about your sexual health to prevent anything serious in the future! So enjoy yourself, but stay safe.

Myth 5. It’s unsafe to skip your period using birth control

Nearly everyone knows we can use hormonal contraception to steer the cycle, but plentiful do believe it is not safe. Years of research do not seem to show any harm to the body.

Severe period pains or heavy bleeding during menstruation can be virtually agonizing. Skipping a period might then be beneficial and help you suffer less. Of course, always consult this decision with your gynecologist.

Next time you think you shouldn’t or can’t do something when having your red days, think again. Research. Test. Getting rid of myth-backed beliefs may make your life comfier.
