*This is a collaborative post on being your own boss
You want to be your own boss. You’ve got the idea, you’ve got a plan to follow, and you know you can make a killing – just as long as you can take the time and effort it requires to really adjust to being in charge of your own career! Don’t worry, it’s a very weird position to find yourself in, even if you’re prepared for it, and it takes a bit of getting used to.
Being your own boss takes commitment, and a lot of courage; we all know that. However, this shouldn’t put you off, which means it’s time to see it as simply part of the process! So, if you’re finding yourself feeling a little ambivalent about your future of self-employment, here are just a few tips that might help you feel back on top.
This is very much a period of transition, and to get through it, you’re going to need to have some resources behind you. Opportunity tends only to come to us when we have the time, money, and energy to take them on, and if you want to attract this kind of energy, as well as work with minimal stress on your shoulders, you need to be sure of a few things.
Firstly, you need to know you’ve got savings to fall back on. Secondly, you need to be sure you can quit your current job and move onto greener pastures, without a strong doubt in your mind it’s the right thing to do. And finally, you need to know you have the time to put the work in, and things like family responsibilities are something you can juggle alongside.
Then, when these factors align, you’ll really have the optimum working conditions for adjusting to being your own boss and setting up your business just right.
Then you need to learn how to spot something good and steer clear of something bad. Sure, there’s a lot of work and/or business out there for someone like you, but not every working opportunity is of the same quality. Don’t let yourself waste time here; you need to be making a name for yourself and establishing your reputation, rather than working for pennies and thinking that’s all you deserve.
For example, using posting boards is a great way to find delivery work for a self-employed trucker, but if you’re planning to write full time, some of the best-known job boards out there are simply content mills. All in all, it’s key to know where the good and real jobs actually are, and how to get in touch with them; don’t worry, you’ll definitely pick this up as you go along!
So, you’ve done it! You’ve beaten the 9 to 5 and become your own boss – now’s your chance to properly adjust to it and take all its troubles in stride. Take your time, and don’t be afraid!
