Quick Things To Do To Organise Your Life

Right…. 2021. Where to start with this year? I’m a huge fan of plans, lists, and routines, and ticking things off a list is my idea of intense excitement. But a lot of these things just don’t feel realistic right now. A lot of us are struggling; we’re tired, we’re fed up and we’re not motivated. And that’s why I’ve not set myself any 2021 goals. We’ve all got to do what’s right for us so overhauling your life or house in a fresh year kind of way probably isn’t right for most people. But doing a few quick things to organise your life may leave you feeling more refreshed and a little less lost.

At the moment organising things leaves me feeling like I have a little control over my life. Even if it’s not about what I do, who I spend time with, or where I go. Because there are no options for those.

Quick things to do to organise your life

Set up a diary or planner

Now we may not have a lot of fun things to put into a planner like meals out, gigs, or parties. But setting up a physical or virtual diary/ planner will help you organise your life and feel more on top of things. It might be where you create your weekly to-do lists, write up meal plans, capture your cleaning tasks for the week or simply note down friends’ and families’ birthdays. Having one central place where it’s all stored will help you organise your life.

Going back a few years I used to love having a physical planner. I’d spend weeks- or who am I kidding months- looking at planner designs online to choose the right one for me. But nowadays I’m more of a fan of a digital version and the Google suite does just the job for me. Although if you’re looking for something more hardcore then I’d recommend Monday. We’ve just started using it at work and it’s great for when you have loads of tasks to do and want to break them up.

Organise your life by clearing out your inbox and setting up folders

Seeing my inbox low and things allocated into their own folders makes me so happy. It might be sad but having an organised digital life helps me feel in control as much as an organise physical life. Whether you’re drowning in emails, or you end up deleting things you later need, so set up some folders. Work out the types of emails you get and set up folders based on that. I have an order and an archive orders folder. So I can track when I’m waiting for a delivery of an item, or when I’ve received it but may need the details later on (great for things with guarantees).

And if you’re the kind of person who’s just drowning in unread emails I’d recommend marking them all as read and working your way slowly through them. Anything over a month older you might as well bin in my opinion.

Sort out the photos on your phone

Most of us are likely to have more storage space on our phones than we’ll ever use. But that means having an awful lot of photos to sift through if you’re ever looking for something in particular, or you want to print something. Sometimes I’ll take 10 photos of the same thing. But no I only need one of them.

Go through the photos on your phone and delete ones you don’t need or have no relevance. If you’re anything like me you’ll have loads of accidental screenshots as I’m always tapping the back of my phone. If you’ve got a lot of photos then perhaps do a few months a day to break it down. The app Get Sorted will help you to manage your photo clearing.

Organise your life by going through your paperwork

If there’s one thing I pride myself on that’s an organised paperwork situation. If I have a document and I need to find it, I know where it is. There’s a folder for household stuff (mortgage, bills, council tax, etc). And there’s a folder for financial stuff (ISAs, investments, bank details, etc). Then there’s a work one for P60’s, payslips, and tax-related things.

Of course, what works for me may not work for you. But help organise your life by getting all of your paperwork together, streamlining anything you no longer need, and organising it. Get a tabbed expanding folder from Amazon and make your organisational dreams a reality.

Start creating a lose daily routine

My routine has been a bit all over the place, although I do feel very grateful to still be working 9-6 every day as it gives me some structure. But my mornings, evenings and weekends had no real structure a few months ago. And they’d all blend into one. A realistic routine is something that helps me. It keeps me motivated and moving. You don’t need to break down every hour of your day, but get up at a similar time each day. Do the same things each morning; a walk or exercise, your skincare routine, making breakfast or simply making the bed.

I don’t know about you but each day seems to blend into each other for me. So do something small each day to make each day feel unique. Maybe Friday is pizza night. Or you set yourself up to do a long walk on a Sunday. Make Monday laundry day, or have Wednesday as a midweek face mask and bath night. Create something to look forward to and give you some structure.

Organise a small area of your house

Organising all of your clothes, or a massive room can feel daunting. And that’s why I like breaking things up into manageable chunks. It might take 20 minutes, or an hour. But it won’t leave me with every item of clothing I own on my floor and me sobbing five hours into reevaluating my wardrobe. Maybe you want to reorganise your pan drawer. Or you want to go through your candles and diffusers. Another day it might be your bedside table.

Take it easy and do it little and often to keep the motivation up to continue to organise your life.

How do you organise your life and feel more in gear?

I swear by my bullet journal which I set up over a year ago, it helps me keep on top of everything.

These are great tips. I really couldn’t cope without my diary/planner even during lockdown!! I like to keep organised. Last week I had a real pre-spring purge going on and sorted through our bedroom and spare room. Everything feels better for it!

This is great advice. I love a planner and I have gone about setting mine up for the year while remaining optimistic that I will get round to really using it.

Sorting out photos and video content on our phone is such a time consuming task, but one we really need to get on top of! We need to sort folders and back-ups. Now’s the time to start planning!

Some great suggestions here, I pick one part of my house which I want to organise a day and things work that way and thanks for reminding me to clear my phone as I always forget to do that

As soon as I put a batch of washing away I end up having to hang more up, it’s a constant cycle isn’t it x

I am always so much more productive when I make to-do lists in the morning. I also works so much better if my desk is tidy and minimalist. I try to keep it that way, with only a notebook and a pen, besides my laptop.

I wish my desk could be that minimal, I use quite a lot of things for my job like stationary wise x

I enjoyed reading this. I am definitely a fan of To Do lists. When I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed, I find it quite therapeutic creating a list, prioritizing the items, and then working my way through it.

Oh, I never even thought to clean out my inbox, although after reading about it here, it DOES need a really good cleaning for certain! Thanks for the reminder about it!
