Now I’m all for saving money and being thrifty when I can, but there are some things in the house that you should spend the money on. When we were renovating our kitchen if there’s one area we knew not to scrimp on it was the appliances. Appliances can be expensive anyway, but I’m a firm believer that you should spend as much as you can to get the best appliances out there.
Here are some of the reasons why you should spend more to get the best appliances.
There’s no good paying £300 for a cheap washing machine that you have to replace in two years’ time as it’s worn out when you could spend £500 in the first place and get one that will last a decade. Of course, I totally understand that you may not physically have the money to spend in the first place. But if you just want to get a seemingly ‘good deal’ think again.
More expensive doesn’t always mean higher quality though so make sure you do your research before buying. But as a general rule if you spend more on an item then it’s likely to last a bit longer. Although do make sure you consider your situation in the property. For example, if you’re planning to move the following year and need a new oven which you wouldn’t take with you then the longevity of the item isn’t as important.
Again buying more expensive items doesn’t always mean you’ll get a better guarantee. But buying from a more expensive brand can help give you a longer guarantee. Brands will give anything from a 1-year to a 10-year guarantee on products. And the higher the guarantee is the longer the brand thinks the product will last. I know I’d be much happier buying something guaranteed to last for 5 years than something with just a 1-year guarantee.
You should consider if the appliance you’re buying is energy efficient. It may cost a little more to buy one, to begin with, but you’ll shave a little money off your monthly energy bills. So in the long-run, you’ll actually save money by getting appliances that are energy efficient. This is especially useful for appliances you have running all the time like a fridge, or ones you may use every single day such as an oven.
The best appliances all come with loads of fancy features and functions. And sometimes it can be hard working out what they all are and what you actually want. But if there’s something you really want for example a built-in water filter in your fridge or an induction hob with five rings, not four then get it if your budget allows.
There’s no point saving a few hundred pounds now if you know eventually you’ll want to upgrade the model for the one you really want in a few years. We made sure to make a list of everything we really wanted in our appliances so that we got the best appliances for our wants and needs. And there’s nothing we’d change about them which means we won’t replace them until we really have to.
Brands generally charge more for stainless steel versions of items compared to black or white ones. Even though inside they’re identical. So consider do you really need a stainless steel version of the washing machine that’s tucked away in a utility room. Or for that dishwasher that’s hidden within a cupboard in your kitchen. We opted for white versions of our washer and drier as it’s in a room off the kitchen and we wouldn’t be looking at it day-in-day-out.
I’ve talked above about getting the features that really matter to you, but consider the ones you don’t need. You may have chosen a fridge which dispenses ice but you rarely use ice so it’s of little use to you. Pay money for the best appliances that have the functions that you really want or need. And don’t pay for things you won’t utilise.
Once you know which appliance you want to buy then compare priced on a site like Price Runner. This way you’ll know the best place you can buy the item from. But also take into consideration vouchers/deals from stores and any cashback you may be able to earn from your purchase.

I live by the motto ‘You get what you pay for’. This is especially true for appliances!
I live by this exact motto too x
We always go for the more expensive options, this is where I tend to use the internet and look for deals or discount codes. It never pays in the long run to get the cheapest option
I’ve defintiley found that when you buy premium brand white goods they last a lot longer and need less servicing too. Mich x
I agree with you here, I tend to spend a little more money on appliances so that I have peace of mind that they are well made and that they last.
We are always spending a little bit more to get the best appliances. We have learned our lesson from buying cheap, you end up buying twice.
Yeah we’ve made that mistake a few times with things like a hoover x
Totally agree with you, you need to spend a little more to have it last for years more. We are currently buying all of ours and also checking what the energy rating is on each of them
Energy rating is such a good point, cheaper models tend to use more energy so can cost more to run x
I totally agree. There’s a time for budgeting and a time for making sure you get what you need. Especially when you have kids, you can’t be without things like a washing machine whilst you organise repairs or save for another one!
We tend to go for the happy medium which , touch wood , has always been good for us 🙂
We’ve always opted for the best within our budget which has worked out well for us so far!
Absolutely agree, go for the best quality you can afford with appliances – and great that you’ve shown how to compare prices too. Often there’s great discounts and offers that will bring the price a little closer to the cheaper items.
