*This is a collaborative post about why we should be supporting local beauty businesses
The past 16 months have been a bit turbulent, and none more so than for those in the beauty and wellbeing industry. Small, independent businesses were the ones that have suffered the most. Hairdressers, barbers, nail salons, spas and beauticians have been closed for months on and off which is why we should all be making an effort to support local businesses now they’re back open for business. So many of us have been choosing to shop local to help the high street and it’s so nice to see people doing this more.
You can find local beauty and wellbeing businesses through Booksy. They offer a booking system where you can browse through all types of health and beauty businesses to book in for whatever treatment you’re looking for. Through the website or app you can find new locations, or just book in at your favourite spot.
A national service by Booksy found that 43% of hair professionals feel that they function in two roles when working. Not just as a hairdresser, but as a counselor supporting the mental well-being of clients, helping the local community to function in these uncertain times. And thinking about it I totally agree. When I go to the hairdresser (or any beautician) we chat and inevitably we talk about a lot of things including how we’re feeling. For so many of us, we’ve not seen as many people as we usually would. And Zoom fatigue is real. So having time to chat with someone in person is a massive relief leading to plenty of talking.
And for some older people, their hairdresser may be the only person they see in a day if they live alone. And through the pandemic, they’ve increasingly become ‘unofficial therapists’.
We moved house last year to a new area so I’m still in the process of trying out new beauty salons to find my favourites. I try to look for small and local businesses to help the damaged economy. Instead of large chain salons, I go for services the local communities offer. Browsing through Booksy there are loads on offer and a few local places I’ve seen when driving past. The good thing is on the app I can instantly see what each place offers and how much they are. Plus, I can also book in through the app.
I’ve actually been to Beauty by Kate a few times, and on my last trip, I had a full-body exfoliating scrub which left my skin feeling so silky smooth afterwards that I’d love to go back. I don’t exfoliate my body as often as I should at home, and it can be quite hard to reach your whole body. Plus getting it done in a beauty salon means you get to lie down and relax as someone pampers you. It even feels a bit like a massage when the scrub is being massaged in.
I love getting a good massage and Inspire Beauty who isn’t too far from me offer a wide range of different types of massages and lengths. They even offer a 1 hour 30 min deep tissue massage, which is incredibly relaxing. Although I’m sure, I’d fall asleep if I had one for that long. The longest massage I’ve ever had is for an hour.
I am a massive wimp when it comes to plucking my eyebrows and hate doing it myself. But over the past few years, I have started getting my eyebrows threaded. Laura Kay London offers this alongside so many other treatments under one roof ranging from laser hair removal to permanent makeup and lash extensions.

I haven’t yet booked in with local beauty businesses but it is something I have been thinking about and am planning to get booked in asap. It is so important to support them.
It’s so true, when they first reopened I booked quite a few things and have had little bits done since x
I have been trying to support local businesses, especially during this time. Sadly, a lot of the local spots I use to enjoy, didn’t re-open after Covid.
That’s so sad to hear x
I have been supporting my local beauty businesses and find them all to be super safe. They seem to be doing well which is great to see. I loved reading about the topics discussed! Fascinating.
Completely agree with this . My two friends own beauty businesses and have really struggled over the pandemic , thankfully they have still managed to get by which I know some have had to close
You are so right! I try to support local businesses as much as we possibly can. I’m looking forward to getting my hair done soon too.
I do often do my own eyebrows too. I had started to get them threaded just before lockdown and want to start that again. My friends beauty business has suffered loads but is starting to get busier now they can work.
I just hate doing my own eyebrows as I’m such a wimp with tweezers haha x
Great points! Yesterday my mom paid to take herself, my daughter and I to go get pedicures. It was nice to get out and get them done, its been almost two years since we’ve done it.
The pandemic has forced so many local business to close their doors, I couldn’t agree more with you on the necessity to support all of them whenever we can. Great post!
Definitiley I have a lovley lady in my town who I go to for treatments and haircuts and it’s good to know I’m supporting her personally. Mich x
My daughter gets her hair done reguarly by a local business and I recently tried it out too. I love it, and the people were so nice. I may start to get my haircut regularly too.
A great reminder and I totally agree. Support local small businesses..now more than every it is so important.
i would love to go for a deep tissue massage!!
I could do with one soon x
I am all for supporting local businesses. Many local businesses closed their doors because of the pandemic.
i’ve always supported local business. i prefer smaller places anyway, especially now since covid
I totally agree that we should be supporting local beauty businesses during this time as they have been hit very hard by recent events. I have already been to a few appointments and have more booked.
I need to book something else in both to pamper myself and support local businesses x
I couldn’t agree more, we must support the local businesses! My regular local beauty salon is still closed. So, I need to check out Booksy site! Thanks for sharing
I like supporting local businesses when I can. These are all great reasons!
I could not agree with this more. Always important to support local businesses for sure. the reasons you give are spot on x
I forget you’re right by me now, LU buddy lol. I do support local businesses, my nail lady is the so talented and lovely, she’s an at home nail tech, we’ve built up such a bond. My hairdresser is also + I use a freelancing one too [that’ll be me tomorrow] – my wax lady lives right around the corner to me too and she works from her summer house. I just find it more personal and when you go to them so regularly you build up a rapport x
So close! Yeah I think I’d like the idea of having waxing done somewhere more private like someones summer house and not a salon x
