12 Ways To Look After Your Mental Health

*This is a collaborative post on ways to look after your mental health

I think everyone can agree that although we may have gotten better there’s still so much we can do to keep people talking about mental health. And to encourage people to be really honest when others ask them how they are, or how they’re feeling. We need to normalise people saying “Not great” or “I’m struggling”. I’m sure we all feel like that at some point.

Anxiety seems to be a mental state that has gotten worse due to the pandemic. Thanks COVID! A common physical symptom of anxiety can be excessive sweating, which can be pretty uncomfortable. You can learn how to stop armpit sweat and lower your heart rate by practicing meditation.

While I wouldn’t say I suffer with my mental health like thousands of people do, I still have bad mental health days when I just feel a bit rubbish. It could be something has actually happened, or it could just be the way my brain feels. And how I feel will totally depend on what happens next. Sometimes there are things I know instantly will make me feel better such as exercise, reading a book, going on a walk etc. But other times I know I just need to sleep it off and remember tomorrow is another day.

If you’re in search of some ways to look after your mental health here are some things that could work. Although I’m not a healthcare professional so seek medical help and advice if you need it.

Don’t be afraid to ask for help

Talking about how you feel and asking for help is not a sign of weakness. It’s a sign that you know you’re not in a good place and you want to feel better. Asking for help can mean whatever you need it to mean. It could be asking a family member to look after your kids so you can have some time to yourself. It could be hiring a cleaner as you’re in a negative mental state and can’t face the cleaning. Or it could be finding someone to talk to so you don’t feel alone. There are lots of mental health services out there who can support you when you need it. And if you want to look after your mental health you’ve already made one of the hardest steps.

Look after your mental health by exercising

Exercise can really boost your mood and send those positive endorphins around your body. And who doesn’t need a little buzz? Even if I’m dreading a work out or feel sore afterwards it does make me feel good, and proud of myself and my body. You don’t need to go all out and do a HIIT class, or get a massive sweat on. Find a form of exercise that makes you feel good and use this as a go to to look after your mental health. Maybe swimming works for you, or going on a small hike. For me it’s either a cycling class, a good weight session, or even a full body stretch.

Practice self care

What self care looks like for you will be totally unique. According the World Health Organisation, Self care means taking the steps you can to take care of your physical health and wellbeing. This could be taking a shower or both or treating your skin. It could be cooking a really good meal and helping your nutrition. Anything that can make you feel physically or mentally better in yourself.

Self care can be a simple thing, and for some people simply getting out of bed and getting dressed is an act of self care.

Taking care of yourself should always be a priority, and that means giving yourself the time and resources to truly relax. One way you can do just this is by getting yourself a THC vape. Delta 8 Disposables provide an easy and efficient way to get a potent form of cannabis in discreet, smokeless form. Whether you’re hoping to get an energy boost or ease stress levels, a THC vape is a great way to potentially reap the therapeutic benefits of cannabis – all while caring for yourself with something that’s actually enjoyable. Plus, it’s relatively affordable compared to most self-care products on the market today!

Look after your mental health by reducing screen time

We spend too much time online and connected, so it’s healthy to have some time off. Even if you’re in a good mental health space. If possible take a day (or even an evening) offline and live in the here and now.

I really want to start doing this a bit more and taking some time away from my phone in general.

Unfollow social accounts that make you feel negative

Social media is a huge part of our everyday lives, especially for millennial and Gen Z. And while there are loads of positives to social media from keeping contact with friends and family, meeting life partners and getting jobs there are plenty of negatives.

A recent study conducted by the OECD, found that those who used social media more intensively on average had lower life satisfaction. We can all see how the other half lives through social media, even if it’s not real. And the need for validation through likes and comments can cause anyone to become anxious. If you find there are social media accounts or people you follow that are making you feel negative, or bad in some way unfollow or mute them.
