*This is a collaborative post on the pros and cons of self-propelled lawnmowers

Self propelled lawnmowers are increasing in popularity – and for very good reason. Over 7 million people have taken up gardening since the pandemic and 63% of UK adults have noted that being in the garden is good for their wellbeing. So, if getting out into the garden is for you then let’s start with the basics – a lawnmower. Self propelled lawn mowers are easier to use and require less effort and energy on your part – meaning you have the energy to get on with the more exciting jobs. However, they are not all good and do have the potential to have more issues and technical problems. This article will discuss the advantages and disadvantages, so you can decide if a self-propelled lawnmower is something you would like for your garden.

What is the difference between a self-propelled lawn mower and a push mower?

Self-propelled lawn mowers have motors to drive the lawnmower forward, making them low effort to use and they run via battery so there’s no risk of cutting the cord – again!  Push power lawn mowers require you to push the mower along with no assistant from the mower, and come as petrol, or electrical – and are usually advised for using in smaller gardens only as they make you get a sweat on!

Pros of a self-propelled lawnmower

Having a self-propelled mower is more convenient, requires less effort and can often get the job done faster than a push mower. They are the ideal option for those with disabilities, large gardens or have outdoor businesses who often need to mow large areas at a time. They can often produce straighter and better cut grass as they are easy to navigate and they do all the movement on your behalf.

Cons

Self-propelled are often more expensive so if you have a small garden it might not be worth it, or a garden that does not require mowing often. Due to the increased use of technology, there are more chances of the mower needing maintenance or a part not working – which can be incredibly frustrating and expensive. Another downside is that they can often be heavier than a push lawn mower, which is a downside that can often be over looked. Consider how far you are going to need to push the mower to reach your grass, and how you plan to store it.

The bottom line is that purchasing a self propelled lawn mower is definitely worth it for those with bigger gardens or who want to make the job easier – but those with a smaller budget may want to avoid this purchase, as a push mower can get the job done to a good standard too.
