Ways To Make Your Journey To The Airport Smoother

RailAir transport from Watford, Reading and Guildford/ Woking to Heathrow Airport

*This is a collaborative post on ways to make your journey to the airport smoother. All words and thoughts are my own

A holiday starts the second you leave your house and head to the airport. But the journey to the airport isn’t always a fun or smooth experience. I’m one of those people who like to get there 3-5 hours before my flight. But even I’ve been stressed during my journey. One time I worried I was heading to the wrong airport (thankfully I wasn’t), another time I couldn’t get a taxi from my hotel to the airport and was worried I’d be stuck, and other times it’s just really bad traffic.

Having your journey to the airport run smoothly is just a great way to start your holiday. Here are some of the ways you can help your pre-holiday journey.

Pre-book transport there and back

Driving to the airport isn’t always an option, especially with expensive car parks. And not everyone will have a family member who can drop them off. Pre-booking transport there (and back) is an easy way to make your journey to the airport smoother.

When I used to live in Watford I would struggle to get to airports. There was no easy transport option other than a taxi, which were expensive. Thankfully now you can pre-book transport to Heathrow via RailAir which would take a lot of stress out of travelling to the airport. And it starts from just £9 one way which is a bargain.

RailAir offers luxury coach travel from Watford, Reading and Woking/ Guildford 7 days a week that run up to every half an hour. It comes with comfortable leather seats, USB chargers and plenty of room for your holiday luggage.

When you’re sat in a comfortable coach the journey will go in no time. And you don’t have to worry about parking.

Make your journey to the airport smoother by knowing you’ve pre-booked lounge access

We love going to airport lounges because you’re guaranteed somewhere to sit and relax that’s generally nicer than the departures lounge. And you get unlimited free food and drink. Once you’ve bought a few drinks and your breakfast/ lunch/ dinner at the airport the prices can stack up.

But lounges are in demand and can get busy. We’ve rocked up a few times and been turned away as they’re full, so make sure you pre-book. We get access through our American Express card and can pay a small fee to pre-book which I will always do now.

Have your bags and liquids sorted out before you arrive

There’s nothing worse than getting in the security queue and having people still sorting out their liquids (sorry if this is you!) Having all of your liquids sorted into a small see-through bag ahead of time will save you any stress when you arrive. And know what you can and can’t take in your hand luggage. If you’re not 100% sure put it in your checked case (if you have one).

Be prepared with your outfit before as well. I usually leave any jewellery off and put it on after I’ve been through security. This way I don’t have to take it off and put it somewhere safe. And I do the same with any belt I plan on wearing.

Make your journey to the airport smoother by checking in online

This may seem like a no-brainer to younger generations, but checking in online will save you time and stress at the airport. You’ll get a better choice of seats by doing it in advance, and it means you don’t always have to arrive quite as early.

Some airlines offer bag drop so you don’t even need to queue up to drop your checked luggage in. When we went on a cruise last November we had checked in and went to a British Airways self-serve machine to drop our bags off. The whole process took less than five minutes and was so smooth.

The travel part of traveling puts me off travel. Airports are super stressful for me – I have 4 kids so trying to get everyone through check-in etc can be stressful. Online check in is a must do for us, it make the whole process easier and only taking hand luggage!

Thanks for your tips, I haven’t flown for a while but when we do we have often been lucky enough to get a lift. It is good to know of other options and about checking in early etc

These are terrific tips. We spend so much planning the fun parts of the trip but getting to the airport often sets the tone of our trip and getting home when we’re tired is often the worst part of our trip. Thanks for the reminder to plan this part, too.

It does feel so fancy even though it doesn’t really work out much more money than grabbing a meal and drink x

These are great tips and advice . The liquids used to always be my down fall and I have held up a queue flapping over my hand luggage liquids at some points! Never again ha! 🙂
