I’ve had a credit card in some form ever since I was 18. For me it was a chance to build up my credit rating and help me out with bigger purchases etc. But I wanted to start off by acknowledging that credit cards aren’t for everyone. So just because our American Express gold card works for us, it doesn’t mean it’s right for everyone. Now I’ve got that out of the way let’s talk about our experience with the card.
I started off getting the British Airways blue American Express card probably seven or so years ago. At the time I was looking for a credit card that I could get rewards through. And the card earned me Avois points to spend with British Airways. Then about four years ago me and Luke looked into other options. We were going to be buying a home around four or five months later and knew we’d be spending a lot on renovation items so we wanted to make the most out of our purchases.
Here are some of the reasons why we love our American Express gold card.
This particular credit card does have an annual charge attached to it of £195. But the first year is totally free. So if you’re on the fence you can take out the card and see how you use it over the year before making any decisions.
This is exactly what we were looking to do, and then we kept the card and haven’t looked back.
Like a lot of reward offers with credit card suppliers there’s a great welcome offer if you sign up for an American Express gold card. The standard offer is if you spend £2,000 on it in your first three months, you’ll get 20,000 Amex Membership Reward Points. These points can be converted to a lot of things (more on that later). At the moment there’s a special deal where you get 25,000 reward points.
This is kind of what sold the card for us as we knew we’d easily spend over £3,000 in the first few months.
While we use British Airways a lot, I didn’t like being restricted with our Blue Amex card. But the points you collect with the gold card can be used across loads of different areas. You get 1 point per £1 you spend, although there are some instances where you can get more.
There’s different airline and hotel vouchers you can pick from, so if you want to fly with Emirates, or Delta you can get vouchers from them. You can also turn your points into gift cards including Amazon, Marks and Spencer, Harrods and loads more.
We have still only redeemed our points on British Airways flights, but it’s good to know there are other options. We’ve had a lot of flights paid for via our points including our return flights from Athens for our cruise last November, our recent flights (both ways) to Portugal, and I booked my flights to Glasgow for Taylor Swift next year with points. And that’s just in a year, and we’ve got plenty more saved up.
There are loads of different offers you can load onto your card that change all the time. For example we recently used one where you got £25 back if you spent over £250 on Selco. We were due to make a big order so this came in super handy.
One offer that I’ve only started to take advantage of is 10% cashback at a lot of restaurants. All you need to do is save the offer to your card and you’ll get cashback when you spend at the relevant place. I’ve just done a quick scan and found Yo! Sushi, Honest Burger, Krispy Kreme and so many more.
You can get £10 credit back a month by ordering Deliveroo on your card. Twice a month you can get £5 back each order.
When you get the Amex gold card you are signed up to Priority Pass. Then each year you get two free spots for airport lounges which are located in hundreds of different airports.
Me and Luke have used this offer near enough every time we’ve been away and I don’t think we’ve ever paid for a lounge. The lounge access it usually £25-35 per person so it’s a nice extra bonus.
I have an American Express Gold Card, and I absolutely love it. I use it almost exclusively.
Same here, anywhere that accepts American express I do x
I definitely need to look into a Gold Card. The card I have now is fairly “meh”.
My dad and brother are very much into getting rewards like the ones given with tis card. They often use theirs to get free flights etc.Getting cashback works for me!
I’m always forgetting to do cashback which is so bad, but the rewards are good as it’s automatic so I don’t have to remember anything x
I try to avoid using my credit cards unless really necessary but I can totally see benefits in this gold card, worth a look at getting one.
I have just got C a credit card to increase her credit rating, she understands how they work and asks me if she can use it. I have credit cards but have them as back up if needed
I’m not using a credit card to avoid purchasing not essential goodies. But reading this makes me want to have this gold card.
It’s great to see a balanced perspective on credit cards and the acknowledgment that they may not be suitable for everyone. Your journey with the American Express Gold card, starting with the British Airways blue card and later transitioning for home renovation benefits, provides valuable insights into how credit cards can be tailored to individual needs and financial goals. Thanks for sharing your experience and emphasizing the importance of finding the right fit!
It’s so important to know that credit cards aren’t suitable for everyone x

Ohh yes, I also love to used AMEX card, just that my county here offers greater points collection with it & can redeem rewards with the points collected. Sometimes I received cash back too. Cheers Siennylovesdrawing

This card looks fantastic to have. I use other card and don’t get many benefits like cash back. I can definitely try to get this card.
I also have the American Express Card and love it! Such a great card with benefits.
I definitely need to make use of the benefits more x
It’s fantastic to know that the American Express Gold Card offers not only great welcome offers but also various extra bonuses and deals. The idea of 10% cashback at restaurants and £10 credit back a month for Deliveroo orders is incredibly appealing, especially when dining out with a family.
All the smaller bits of cashback etc all adds up x
