*This is a collaborative post on the best town and cities to visit in Columbia
Columbia, in all its natural beauty and cultural significance in the whole of South America. So it unsurprisingly tops many people’s travel list. Surrounded on one side by the Pacific and the Caribbean on the other, Columbia boasts some incredible coastlines with plenty of stories to tell.
Where you can enjoy the hustle and bustle of major capitals like Bogotá and trek through miles and miles of lush rainforest, Columbia is an adventurer-lover’s paradise and has everything you need for an extended stay. With so much to do there, this country cannot be rushed. Here are all the places that’ll keep you coming back for more.
With great connections from Gatwick airport, many travellers will land in Bogotá, meaning that the eclectic city will form their first impression of the country. Authentically Columbian through and through, take your time strolling through the historic hold town, gazing at the brightly coloured buildings, before stopping off for some food and a traditional Columbian coffee.
If you’re keen to party the night away, the north of the city is where you’ll find the entertainment district that’s packed with bars, clubs and festivals during the summer months.
Easily one of the most picturesque towns in the whole country, Guatapé’s personality is bound to absolutely blow you away. Officially one of the most colourful towns in the world, you’ll find that every building is brighter than the last.
A real sanctuary for artists, there are incredible illustrations everywhere. You’ll find pictures of animals, people and depictions of local life around every corner. It’s easy to spend the whole day here wandering the streets, meeting locals and drinking coffee.
A trip to Columbia isn’t complete without a day or two in the mountains. One such destination is Minca that used to be a quiet town and is now a hotspot for tourists who want to experience Columbia’s natural landscapes to the full.
What’s more, it also offers welcome respite away from the oppressively hot summers in the city. With plenty of tropical trees to protect you from the sun, there’s lots of down-time to be had here. But if you’re up for an adventure, there are plenty of hikes to sink your teeth into.
One of the adventure capitals of Columbia, Tayrona National Park is where resplendent coastline meets dense rainforest and promises endless nights under the stars with the accompaniment of tropical insects.
The park is best experienced over a few days, so book some accommodation in advance. As well as campgrounds, they have thatched bungalows and cottages that overlook the lush jungle. It really has to be seen to be believed.
