*This is a collaborative post on how to add more function to your outdoor space
No matter how big or small your outdoor space, you can make it work much harder for you. Most people have a seating area and perhaps some cute plants around – but does that give you the garden that you want?
When we talk about adding function to the garden, we mean adding value and something to your lifestyle. So that the time you spend outdoors is quality time.
If you have more than just you in the home or regular visits from your friends and their children, then it is always worth considering what other people need?
Having somewhere that has some shade for the pets, like patio awnings from Caribbean Blinds, or a stretch of greens for kids to play (if you have the space), means your garden accommodates as many people as possible.
Even as a huge sun lover, it can be a little much when it peaks at midday. If you don’t want to head inside, look for multiple shade options. Many people have the traditional garden set with an umbrella, but there are other things to consider.
Take into consideration where you get the most sun in the garden and the size of the coverage you want.
It can be as simple as four wooden posts and an easy to put up fabric covering, or you might prefer a permanent shade option.
The whole garden should be great for relaxing, but it can be very useful to have a dedicated area. Relaxing space outside might be lower than typical dining seats and are designed to sit on and unwind.
If you have some space, add some fairy lights around the area so that you can enjoy the space long into the evening when it is warm enough.
Even if you already have a path, is that the natural path people would take to walk across the garden?
People tend to find their natural pathing; as we see in natural reserves, there might be a man-made path, and then a path that people have made simply by walking that way. They’re called desire pathing.
See if the path you have now is the natural path people would take, and adjust yours to match.
Think about what you do most often outside when the weather allows for it. Do you spend hours reading after hanging up the washing? Or does a crisp glass of wine (or a hot coffee) sound more like your thing?
Make the most room for how you like to spend your time. Even if you have been reading your book on a small stool and rickety table, you might be surprised just how much a dedicated space can matter to you.
Even if you don’t love the idea of trimming grass and pruning bushes, it is always worth considering adding a small path of wildflowers into your garden. Not only do they smell amazing, but you will entice some butterflies and other pollinators to the garden too.
