Looking for a different sort of holiday this year? Choose an adventure-filled getaway that everyone will remember. Here are some exhilarating holiday ideas to consider.

Hiking and camping

Exploring nature on foot is a fantastic way to bond as a family while enjoying the great outdoors. It may not be the most glamorous option, but camping gives you the chance to connect more deeply without the many distractions of modern life.

The UK is dotted with incredible hiking destinations. The Lake District offers a range of trails, from gentle walks around lakes like Windermere and Buttermere to more challenging hikes up Scafell Pike, England’s highest peak.

For a taste of wilderness camping, head to Scotland’s Cairngorms National Park. It’s a treasure trove of wildlife and offers remote camping spots where you can truly escape.

Kayaking, canoeing, and rafting

The thrill of water sports could be the perfect way to keep all the family entertained this holiday. Kayaking, canoeing and rafting combine the excitement of navigating rivers and lakes with the serenity of being on the water.

The Wye Valley is a popular destination for canoeing and kayaking, offering calm stretches of the River Wye suitable for families. Elsewhere, the Tryweryn River in North Wales and the River Dart in Devon provide more challenging rivers, ideal for rafting adventures.

If you have more budget to spend, consider the rivers of Slovenia. The Soča River enjoys gorgeous turquoise waters and a stunning alpine backdrop. The Ionian sea is the perfect location for family activity holidays spent sailing and kayaking.

Skiing and snowboarding

A ski holiday is the ultimate winter adventure for families. Time on and off the slopes in the snowy surroundings can be a magical experience.

The French Alps are a classic choice, with the likes of Les Gets and La Plagne offering slopes for all ages and abilities, and a range of different family-friendly activities. Ski schools are great to help your kids learn the ropes before tackling some more challenging runs.

Safari and nature expeditions

Get up close and personal with incredible wildlife on a safari holiday. Africa boasts some of the best safari experiences, with South Africa’s Kruger National Park offering particularly family-oriented tours. Embark on guided game drives to spot the Big Five or join a bush walk for a more intimate experience with nature.

You don’t have to leave the UK to find wildlife, though. A nature expedition in the Scottish Highlands gives you the chance to spot red deer, golden eagles and perhaps even a glimpse of the elusive Scottish wildcat.

Theme and adventure parks

If you’ve got a need for speed, theme parks provide thrills and spills galore. You’ll find options up and down the country, from Alton Towers and Flamingo Land in the north to Chessington World of Adventures and Thorpe Park in the south.

There are exhilarating rides for the big kids in the family (adults included) and more gentle attractions for the little ones.
