Six Things To Add To Your Holiday Budget

Going on holiday can get pretty pricey, but it’s not just the holiday itself you need to consider. For our latest cruise (which we head on in a few days time), the cruise itself is less than 50% of our overall holiday budget.

Not everyone will have all of these costs as some are lifestyle and work dependent, but here are some things to add to your holiday budget.

The holiday itself

Let’s start with the obvious one. Of course you need to add the holiday itself to your budget. This could be a package price for a resort trip, or a cruise. Or it could be prices for flights and hotels if you’re doing it yourself.

This is going to be the biggest cost if you’re at a resort (floating or on land). Although if you’re not it’s likely other things will need more in the holiday budget.

The price of this will depend on the type of holiday you’re doing.

Add travel to your holiday budget

This can include both in the UK and when you’re away. We’ve had to add a taxi to the airport and a hotel stay at Heathrow to our budget. You may also need transport when you arrive at your destination if you’ve not chosen a package holiday.

Research how much this is likely to cost so you can add it to your holiday budget.

Eating out while you’re away

You’ll need to eat when you’re away, but how much you budget will depend on where you’re going. Although this may be one you can skip or reduce if you’re on a resort.

For our cruise we won’t need money within the cruise itself but we have four days in Reykjavík beforehand that we need to budget for. And there may be some days when we’re off the boat and want lunch or a snack. So this has been factored into our holiday budget.

Add spending money to your holiday budget

We all need spending money, again how much you need will depend on your  type of holiday and destination. When we did our last cruise I stupidly didn’t factor this in so we overspent just on little souvenirs when we got off the boat.

Spending money may also include money for trips and activities. I’ve booked most of our activities for our trip ahead of time which has helped our holiday budget. You don’t want to regret not doing something just because you didn’t factor it into your budget.

Any pet care costs

We have two beautiful cats which need looking after when we go away. If it’s a few days then usually family come round, but for a two week trip they go into a cattery.

The one by us is really affordable (compared to some costs I’ve seen), but it will cost us about £320 for both of them for a two week trip.

Again this is something we need to factor into our budget.

If you’re self-employed factor in essentials

If you’re employed then chances are you get paid holiday, but for anyone self employed this isn’t the case. When Luke has two weeks off it means he doesn’t get paid for two weeks.

So we factor in money to cover his income while we’re away. Some savings can be paused so we don’t need to save everything but it’s still something that has to be factored into the holiday budget.

What else do you factor into your holiday budget?

Pet care costs are something that many owners would likely forget. Eating out is a big one and something we all get carried away with!

You’re absolutely right! Almost all the time, we end up spending a lot more than anticipated because of these hidden costs! Like the pet sitter, this by itself is a huge cost.

Yeah pet sitting costs can be so much, we paid £320 for our two cats for two weeks and that’s actually a good price for round here x

I always budge in an emergency cushion for the holidays, as well. You never know when something unexpected might happen!

Adding pet care costs is so important, especially if you’ll be traveling! We had to board our dogs a few years ago, and we were shocked at the price.

These are great tips and all important things to think about. Getting around whilst on holiday is definitely something to factor in as well as food. And of course any pet care and loss of earnings if you are self employed and won’t be working.

Yes indeed, it is not just the cost of the Holiday, but we tend to go shopping and eat out too. Those are something to take into account also

Being self employed, it’s always an even bigger factor to think about! It’s so important when you are budgeting to include things like food and pet care. Thank you for the reminder.

Factoring pet costs is important and booking a service to look after them far enough in advance too. We no longer have pets but finding a cattery with availability isn’t always easy if you leave it to the last minute. I budget for everything before booking so I can see if we can afford the trip.

I always have to book our cattery quite far in advance as I worry they’ll be fully booked and I only want to take them to same place x
