Are You Sending Money Down The Drain With Your Bathroom Design Process?

*This is a collaborative post on whether you’re wasting money during your bathroom design process

Your bathroom is probably one of the most used rooms in your house, and the chances are that you’ll want to design a space that lives up to this usage. Seeing as a bathroom renovation can add roughly 4-5% to your home’s value, and is also liable to see pretty heavy wear, you probably don’t even mind splashing a little cash here.

But, is your bathroom remodel at risk of sending more money down the drain than you really need to spend here? This is something that many homeowners are guilty of, and can quickly outstrip a remodel might add. Keep on reading to find out just a few signs that you’re guilty of this fatal mistake.

# 1 – Changing the layout

It can often be difficult to see past the bathroom that’s in front of you. As a result, you may feel the need to entirely change the layout of that bathroom to get the look you want. But this is rarely a cost-effective choice.

Changing the layout in any bathroom is an expensive process that requires skilled professionals like plumbers, and may even involve ripping up your floors. Obviously, there are sometimes practical reasons to reroute things like toilet plumbing and bath locations, but if you’re purely looking for better aesthetics, it’s always worth considering more affordable alternatives.

Simple steps, like changing your bath or getting a new toilet plumbed in at the same location, will cost half the price, and will likely transform the space more than you would think.

# 2 – Buying everything individually

If you only want to replace one thing in your bathroom, then buying an individual replacement can be cost-effective. But, if you intend to replace the majority of key items, costs will soon add up if you source each item separately.

Looking into bathroom suites, or even seeking full bathroom setups second-hand, tends to be more cost-effective. This option also has the benefit of ensuring that all of your bathroom pieces match. Simply consider, at the start of your project, what you realistically need to replace, and how much that’s going to cost individually vs. as a set.

# 3 – Assuming you need experts for every job

While we’re all now more aware of the benefits of DIY remodels for improvements on a budget, many of us still assume that it’s best to leave bathrooms to the professionals. There’s plumbing involved here, after all, and one slip could cost you a lot more than simply calling in the big guns to begin with.

In reality, though, while you should most definitely contact plumbers to actually plumb in your new bathroom, you’d be surprised by how much you can do here yourself. Even tiling can be a great DIY task if you do your research, allowing you to achieve the bathroom of your dreams, for half the amount you’d spend otherwise.

It’s worth spending money on a quality bathroom remodel, but there’s no need to send money down the drain with these fatal mistakes.
