*This is a collaborative post on how to create the dream bedroom on a budget but all words are my own
A bedroom is a very important space. You may not spend a lot of your day there, but it’s so important for your wellbeing to have a comfortable and relaxing space to unwind and sleep in.
But your bedroom may not be a space you want to invest too much money in. Here are some ways to create a dream bedroom on a budget.
I used to buy cheap bedding until Luke showed me how much better I could sleep by investing in something a bit better. And ultimately your dream bedroom is for sleeping so the bedding you use is very important, and it doesn’t have to be expensive.
Start with a good fitted sheet that is the right size for your mattress. Then choose a bedding set with pillows to make it all match The latest set that we picked up is the Portofino 200 thread count set* from DUSK. Opting for a neutral colour means you can keep your room feeling calm and bring in colours with your accessories. We’re going to keep this bedding for our spare bedroom because even guests deserve a bit of luxury.
Isn’t it amazing when you go into a fancy hotel and the bed just looks so inviting? Most of that is how it is dressed, and it’s easy to dress your bed like a designer. Once you have a good base with your mattress, sheet, and new bedding it’s time to make the most of the way it looks. You might even prefer to transform your bed by re-upholstering it. Buying upholstery fabric will allow you to achieve this and help you attain the bed of your dreams. Most hotels will layer items to make the bed look cosy and inviting, it’s amazing what difference a few cushions and a throw can make to a bed.
Decorative cushions are a great way to add colour to a room without having to commit to going bright on the walls. And they’re so easy to change up when you fancy something different. A throw can be both practical in keeping you warm when it’s cold, and also look good. It doesn’t have to just go at the end of your bed, you can drape it over the corner for that boutique hotel vibe.
We chose the Vermont Throw in Navy* as a contrast to go with the bedding as something like a throw or pillows is where you get the chance to bring in some colour or contrast. DUSK has a lot of different throws whether you’re looking to create your dream bedroom, or just have something to snuggle up with on the sofa.
Clutter and too many things don’t make you think of a soothing and calming atmosphere. But if you’re anything like me I have a lot of stuff, and a lot of stuff I need while getting ready. But that’s where storage baskets, bins, and enclosed boxes come in.
I have some open shelving in our bedroom and using little baskets is a great way to hide away some of the unsightly clutter.
A simple bit of colour can make a huge difference to any room, and your bedroom is no different. Opt for an accent wall behind your bed to really anchor the room. You can opt for something soft and calming like sage green or a blush pink. Or you can go for something bolder and darker like a navy or dark green. Whatever will make you feel relaxed in the space.
Adding artwork to the wall can also make a huge difference without permanently altering the room. This is especially useful if you’re renting and can’t decorate yourself.

I used to buy cheap bedding but realise that spending more is important. I am currently trying new fitted sheets as now we have finally got our matress sorted I need deeper fitted sheets. Clutter is something we need to work on as have things in boxes as I can not find something that is just right for my make up and nail varnish collection
We have to get quite deep sheets too, they’d look so much nicer if I steamed them but I’m too lazy for that haha x
Great ideas, I like that you don’t have to break the bank in order to create a nicer space to enjoy when in your room.
Some great tips here and one which I will be following, especially about clearing the clutter. Also will be checking out Portofino beddings
Paint an accent wall, yessss…That is what we did and it made the entire difference.
I think the bedding really brings a space to life. I never gave me much thought until I was old enough to style my own room and now that space is really like a sanctuary for me. Great tips!
When you get your own place or have your own space it becomes so much more important x
I redid the bedroom, and bought my dream bed set. It feels outdated to me now that I have it though and I’m wondering what’s wrong with me, lol
We built a huge walk in wardrobe along one wall. It’s great for storage and means we can keep the rest of the room quite minimal.
A walk-in wardrobe or proper space like that is my absolute dream! x
I love comfortable but chic bedding too. Agree to all that you say and think the bed is the focal part of a bedroom. I don’t like lots of pillow or cushions though. The minimum look is the best, but with luxurious sheets.
I used to have loads of cushions but they did get a bit too much x
I love the tip about adding a throw to your bed. It just instantly looks more cosy. I wish I had more storage in my house as my bedroom seems to be the place everything ends up in
I swear by our storage bed as I can hide so much under there x
Our bedroom is my “happy place.” I make sure everything in the room is color coordinated. I don’t like clutter so I make sure everything is in place. A bedroom is where we relax and get must needed rest after a hard day’s work. I think my next project would be an accent wall. That would be really nice. Thanks for the tips!
I wish I was more like you and didn’t have as much clutter in my room haha x
