Investing In Skincare And Beauty

I love saving money and spending less. If there’s a voucher or discount to be had I’ll find it. And I hate spending on things that I deem unnecessary. But there are some things I don’t mind splashing on and investing in skincare and beauty is one of them.

For me skincare and beauty is an act of self care and a way to feel good about myself. And if it’s within budget it will always be something I prioritise. Skincare isn’t just a quick fix but rather a long-term commitment to both health and self-esteem.

Why I’m happy investing in skincare and beauty

When it comes to treatments and grooming I’m pretty low maintenance. I get my hair cut a few times a year with the same hairdresser I’ve had for about 15 years and I pay less than £20.

I don’t get my nails done at salons regularly, that’s limited to just a few times a year. And I don’t regularly do things like waxing, threading, tanning etc. So when I do want to invest I don’t mind spending the money.

Back in my 20’s I used to be makeup obsessed, but the pandemic changed that. I stopped wearing makeup every day and became way more into skincare. If my skin feels and looks good, I feel good. And times when I’ve had quite bad skin it’s gotten me down. So investing in skincare and beauty can make a big difference to my mindset and how I’m feeling.

As the saying goes, “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” Investing in skincare and beauty early on can help prevent the development of more severe skin conditions in the future. I’ve used anti-aging products since I was in my 20’s and I’d like to think they’re helping.

My facial subscription

There’s a salon close to my parent’s house, near where I used to live, that does a facial subscription. You can pay anything from £29 to £99 a month and then every month you can get a facial from a list depending on your price level.

I pay £39 a month and get either a 30 min hydrating or glowing facial, or dermaplanning every single month. And my skin has been so much better for it. I don’t think I used to appreciate how much my skin loved a facial until I started getting them regularly, and I can see the difference.

The other thing I love about getting a facial is that it’s 30 minutes where I fully switch off. I’m not looking at a screen and scrolling and I’m not interacting. I’m laying down with my eyes closed just relaxing. And I don’t do that often enough.

Investing in skincare and beauty products

I went through a phase where I bought a lot of products so I am working my way through my stash. But when I do need to buy something new I’ll always shop around for the best prices, or wait for a discount (Black Friday is great for that).

And yes spending £40+ on a little jar or bottle does make me cringe a little. But if it’s something my skin is going to like and it’s going to help it stay healthy then I’m fine with it.

The areas I save money in

As I mentioned above I don’t get my nails done very often, typically I will get shellac done before a holiday, or for Christmas. But I still like to keep my nails looking nice, and paint chips way too easily for me. So I use nail wraps. I buy mine from Lily & Fox where each set costs about £1.99 and they last on me around 2-3 weeks. This is significantly cheaper than going to the salon and I can do it in my own time at home.

The hairdresser I use doesn’t work in a salon, she’s a mobile hairdresser. And because she doesn’t have to pay chair fees at a salon she’s much cheaper than anywhere else. When I get my hair cut it’s under £20. And on the odd occasion I get my balayage done (and a hair cut) it’s under £100. Compared to how much I know people pay in a salon, it’s a bargain.

Do you invest in skincare and beauty? If so what’s your top priority spend?

I am with you on this. It’s always good to have those non-negotiables that make us feel great. For me it’s my hair! I love the thought of a subscription service for beauty treatments – great way to make it a priority.

Sometimes these treatments or things can make such a difference to how you feel that it’s worth the money x

I can’t agree more with you, investing in skin care and general health is the most important thing for sure. That’s my motto for 2025.

Ooh, a facial subscription sounds like just the thing! None of us are getting any younger. You have to invest in your self-care.

I don’t really wear make up. I was a tomboy as a teenager so missed that make up experimenting phase – and it never really changed. But I do use a good daily moisturiser. It isn’t cheap, but I stock up when there’s a 3 for 2 offer and that doesn’t feel so bad!

I barely wear makeup now and my skin loves me for it, but I do use a lot of skincare to keep my skin healthy and happy x

It took me a while to get into skincare. Now I am in my 40s I do tend to invest in products. I don’t spend lots – and wait until special offers are on usually. Then I pick up my toner, moisturiser and serum.

I do invest in skincare like moisturizer, serum and sunscreen. Taking care of my skin is important to me. I clean my nails myself, though. Having it done at the nail spa is just too expensive for me.

    • Rhian Westbury says:

Yeah getting your nails done can be so expensive. I prefer going infrequently so it feels like a real treat x

I am pretty low maintenance too and I agree with you that skincare is something investing on. There is no point in trying to save on cheap products but later spend so much trying to fix it because it had adverse effects.

This is really informative. I like how you explain the importance of quality products over quantity. It’s a helpful reminder to be mindful of what we put on our skin.
