When me and Luke found out we were expecting last October I wanted to go out and start buying straight away. But I tried to stay sensible and it’s only been in the last few months that we’ve really ramped things up. We’ve put off some of the bigger purchases like her cot to bed, buggy etc, but that will come in the next 1-2 months. But I’ve been focusing on the smaller things that I know will make a difference.

For the next few weeks I’m going to talk about some of the essentials I’ve been buying for baby girl. As a first time mum who hasn’t yet used these products, forgive me if there are any essentials I’ve missed etc. I’m learning as I go.

But here are some of the newborn bathing and hygiene essentials I’ve got ready to go for when she arrives.

Organyc baby wipes and cotton pads

Baby wipes and cotton pads

Everyone says you can’t have enough wipes and cotton pads. It looks like we’ll be going through these like crazy so we’ve started stocking up.

Organyc is a global wellness brand which is available in 43 countries around the world. Founded in 1947 the brand are the world’s first clinically proven organic period product to reduce intimate skin irritations. And since coming out with period products they’ve launched a line of maternity and baby items. And if the products are proven to reduce intimate skin irritations for women, then that’s enough endorsement for us to use on our baby.

We’re going to be using a lot of wipes so have the Organic cotton baby wipes* to try out. They’re 100% organic cotton infused with a gentle organic formulation making them ideal for daily cleansing. The wipes themselves feel pretty thick so they should be strong enough when keeping baby’s delicate skin clean.

I didn’t really think there was much difference in cotton pads, but the Organic cotton baby squares* are also made from 100% certified organic cotton. The embossed cotton allows for deeper cleansing which will be great for the early days. But despite this they’re still gentle on the skin.

Organii baby items including nappy cream, foam bath and shampoo, dry baby oil, scented water and baby cream

Newborn bathing and hygiene essentials

There are so many different baby products you can buy that it can be hard to know where to start. So this baby bundle* from ORGANii is great one to try out as it covers all the bases.

The certified organic and natural bundle comes with a scented water, baby cream, nappy cream, foam bath and shampoo, and dry baby oil. And buying the set essentially works out at getting one product for free vs buying them individually.

The scented water especially is going to be great for those early weeks when she can’t have a proper bath. I’m sure I’ll be going through quite a bit of this to keep her clean!

ORGANii’s mission is to offer great value, certified organic and natural products that actually work. They believe that organic doesn’t have to be expensive, but nor should it compromise on performance. And they are always trying to do better for the health of the planet, so they only use natural, vegan and cruelty free raw ingredients in their products.

Peachies size 2 nappies

All the nappies

One thing I think everyone is that babies go through a lot of nappies. On courses I’ve done and things I’ve read it could be as many as 12-15 a day, so you need a good supply.

Peachies started with the simple question, why can’t nappies be better?! Back in 2020 they set out to engineer a super soft upgrade to the nappy with unrivalled absorbency, next-level liquid capacity and no nasty chemicals or fragrances. And aren’t they all things you want in a good nappy? A leak, or a baby sitting in a wet nappy is a thing of nightmares.

We have some of the size 1 and size 2 nappies* to try out when baby girl arrives (I will report back!)

One of the great things about peachies is you can buy a trial pack to check they work for your baby. And then you can buy a plan where a supply of nappies is shipped out to you every six weeks so you don’t even need to worry.

Ubbi elbow rest to use on the bath when bathing a baby

Newborn bathing and hygiene essentials to make our lives easier

We have plenty of newborn bathing and hygiene essentials for them, but what about us parents?!

Now baby girl won’t be in the bath straight away but when she is kneeling down next to the bath isn’t going to be comfortable. So we have this bath kneeler* and elbow rest* from ubbi to try out. I’d thought about a kneeler, but until I saw it on their website an elbow rest hadn’t even crossed my mind.

I’ve tried these out on the bath and they’re so cushioned that it makes kneeling and leaning over so much more comfortable. The kneeler has a non-slip bottom to stay in place, and the elbow rest has suction-cups as well so there will be no movement. They each have straps so you can hang them for drying and storage. The elbow rest even has little pockets at the side for easy access to toys or bath supplies.

I just know these are going to be a game changer for our comfort during bath times.

Ubbi cloud and droplet bath toys

Making bath time fun

I know over time our bath is going to become overrun with toys but initially we have these cloud and droplet toys*.

They’re really soft to touch and a great size for kid’s little hands. All you need to do is submerge them in water and cover the top hole to let the ‘rain’ out. I can see this being really fun during bath time.

And from a practical point you can air dry them to prevent mold, but also put them in the dishwasher for an easy clean.

Other newborn hygiene and bathing essentials we’ve picked up

We’ve not yet bought it but of course we will be getting a baby bath. We’ve found one from Skip Hop which is a 3-stage-bathtub so you can move bits around when the baby grows so it will last longer.

They may not be hygiene essentials for baby, but I’ve got a supply of breastfeeding bits from nipple cream to nursing pads. I am going to try breastfeeding but we’ll see how that goes. And I know that I’ll try anything to make the process a bit more comfortable.

We do have a nappy bin, and while I don’t think we’ll use it all day, but we thought it would be great for in the night. If I’m changing in the middle of the night I want somewhere quick and easy to put dirty nappies. And somewhere I can put them where I won’t be able to smell it.
