Online banking is a revolution in money management, and I’m so glad it’s been around for most of my adult life. It makes it easier than ever to check your balance, transfer money, and pay bills. However, with the rise of digital banking comes the need for strong security practices. Cybercriminals are constantly coming up with new ways to hack into accounts and steal personal information, so it’s crucial to know ways for securing your online banking.
Below are one of the basics of online banking security with tips to help you safeguard your accounts from potential threats.
One of the most basic yet essential steps in online banking security is using a strong, unique password for each of your accounts. Don’t write down your passwords, but if you’re worried about forgetting it consider using a password manager to securely store your passwords.
Weak passwords, like ‘password123’ or ‘123456’, are easy for hackers to guess.
Using the same password across multiple sites increases the risk of a data breach affecting more than one of your accounts.
Combine uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters like ! or #.
Avoid using easily guessable information such as your name, birthdate, or common words.
Make your password at least 12 characters long.
Two-factor authentication (2FA) adds an extra layer of security to your online banking account by requiring a second form of verification when logging in.
Even if someone steals your password, they won’t be able to access your account without the second factor of authentication.
This second factor could be a one-time code sent via text or email, or a fingerprint scan if you’re using a mobile banking app.
Go to your online banking security settings and find the option for 2FA. It may also be called ‘two-step verification’.
Choose your preferred method of verification (e.g., SMS, authenticator app, or email).
Follow the instructions provided by your bank to complete the setup process.
One of the best ways to catch potential fraud early is by regularly monitoring your bank accounts for any suspicious activity.
If a hacker gains access to your account, they may try to make small transactions first to test the waters before making larger ones.
Regular monitoring helps you spot unauthorised charges and report them promptly to your bank.
Set up alerts to notify you of any transactions, especially large withdrawals or transfers.
Check your account balances and transaction history weekly, or more frequently if possible.
If you notice anything unusual, contact your bank immediately.
Phishing is a type of scam where cybercriminals impersonate legitimate businesses, including banks, to trick you into revealing your personal information, such as passwords or account numbers. You may need an email, text message or even phone call asking for personal information.
Phishing attacks often appear legitimate, with communication that look like they came from your bank.
Clicking on links or downloading attachments in these messages could give hackers access to your account.
Don’t click on suspicious links or download attachments from unknown senders.
Always verify the sender’s email address to make sure it’s legitimate.
If you receive a message claiming to be from your bank, contact your bank directly (using a phone number or email from their official website) to confirm if the message is genuine.
Look out for signs of phishing, such as poor grammar or urgent requests to take immediate action.
Accessing your online banking accounts over a public Wi-Fi network can be risky because it may not be encrypted, making it easier for hackers to intercept your information.
Public Wi-Fi networks in places like coffee shops or airports are often unsecured. This means your data could be at risk if you access your bank account while connected to them.
Always use a secure, private Wi-Fi connection when accessing your bank accounts online.
If you must use public Wi-Fi, consider using a Virtual Private Network (VPN) to encrypt your internet connection and protect your data.
Avoid logging into your bank account over public Wi-Fi whenever possible.
Ensuring your devices are updated with the latest security patches is essential for protecting your online banking accounts.
Software updates often include important security fixes that protect against newly discovered vulnerabilities.
Cybercriminals frequently target outdated software to exploit weaknesses in your devices.
Set your devices (laptop, smartphone, tablet) to automatically download and install updates.
Regularly check for software updates for your operating system, browsers, and any banking apps you use.
If you haven’t updated your devices in a while, make it a priority to do so.
It’s easy to leave your online banking session open, especially if you’re using a device like a laptop or smartphone. However, leaving your session open can expose you to security risks.
If someone gains access to your device, they can access your banking information.
Logging out ensures that unauthorised individuals can’t easily get into your account.
Always log out of your online banking account when you’re done using it, especially if you’re using a shared or public device.
Clear your browser history and cache if you’ve accessed sensitive information.
Use biometric authentication (fingerprint or facial recognition) when available for quicker and safer access to your account.
Cybercriminals may create fake banking apps or websites that look almost identical to the real ones to trick you into entering your account information.
Fake apps or websites can steal your login credentials and personal information.
Make sure to download banking apps only from official app stores such as the Apple App Store or Google Play.
Always type your bank’s website address directly into your browser (don’t click on links from emails or messages).
Double-check the website URL for “https” and a padlock symbol, indicating that the connection is secure.
Online banking is convenient, but it also requires a level of awareness to keep your accounts safe. By following some of the basic security practices discussed above you can reduce the risk of your banking information falling into the wrong hands.
Security is an ongoing process, so always stay informed and be proactive in safeguarding your accounts. The more you know about protecting your personal information, the more confident you can feel when using online banking to manage your finances.
