*We were provided a Toucon wireless security camera, but all thoughts and words on why home security is important are my own
October marks National Home Security Month, which is the perfect time to take a closer look at how we’re protecting our home — especially now that life looks very different for us.
Since having a baby, my perspective on home security has completely changed. It’s no longer just about protecting our belongings, but about keeping our family safe. Adding to that the fact that Luke has a van full of work tools parked outside, and home security has become one of our biggest priorities. Prevention is better than cure.
It’s easy to think, “It won’t happen to me,” but burglaries and thefts can happen anywhere. Beyond the financial impact, there’s also the emotional stress and loss of peace of mind that can linger long after. For us, protecting our little one and safeguarding Luke’s tools — which are essential for his work — gives us huge peace of mind.
The reality is that modern home security doesn’t need to be complicated or expensive. With advances in wireless technology and smart home apps, keeping an eye on your home has never been easier.
And because October is National Home Security Month, it’s the perfect reminder to check how secure your home really is.
I’m working with Toucan Smart Home this month and they’ve highlighted five key mistakes people often make when it comes to home security.
It’s a common misconception that renters can’t install security systems because of drilling restrictions or short-term leases. But that couldn’t be further from the truth.
The fix: Toucan offers a brilliant range of no-drill, wire-free smart home devices that are totally renter-friendly. Their Wireless Video Doorbell V3 )£99.95), is weatherproof, battery-powered, and doesn’t require any drilling to install. It even includes a wireless chime with customisable ringtones, two-way talk, and an ultra-wide 180° field of view.
Even better, it’s compatible with Alexa and Google Home, so you can keep tabs on who’s at your door — hands-free.
Many smart home systems look affordable upfront, but the costs quickly add up once you start paying for app access or cloud storage.
The fix: One of the things I love most about Toucan is that their app is completely free to use. You can live stream in HD, get motion alerts, and access automatic recordings whenever activity is detected — all without paying a monthly fee. If you do want to upgrade for extras like more storage or shared users, there are optional Pro and Elite plans — but the base app gives you everything you need to feel secure without spending a penny more.
Fake cameras might look the part, but experienced burglars can spot them a mile away. If anything does happen, you’ll have no footage to rely on.
The fix: Invest in a real camera like the Toucan Wireless Security Camera S4 (£99.95), which we’ve been testing out recently. It’s wire-free, weather-resistant, and records crystal-clear HD footage that’s stored securely in the cloud.
The S4 gives us total peace of mind knowing that if there’s any suspicious movement around the house we’ll be alerted instantly. We have ours on our log cabin which currently houses Luke’s motorbike.
It’s surprisingly easy to overlook ladders, garden tools, or other items left outside, but for opportunistic thieves, those can be perfect for breaking in.
The fix: Make it a habit to lock away anything that could be used to access windows or doors. Keeping sheds secure and gardens tidy removes temptation and keeps your home off a burglar’s radar.
Darkness gives intruders cover, and without visible deterrents, your home can look like an easy target.
The fix: The Toucan Security Light Camera (£129.99) combines a powerful motion-activated floodlight with a high-definition camera. It doesn’t just light up your driveway or garden — it acts as an instant deterrent to anyone lurking around.
To celebrate National Home Security Month, Toucan is offering something special — the first 50 customers who purchase a Toucan security camera or video doorbell in October will receive a free One-Year Pro Subscription Card (worth £29.99).
That includes 7 days of cloud storage, unlimited video downloads, custom video durations, shared user access, and even holiday greetings! Just use the code HOMESECURE25 at checkout to take advantage.
Since becoming parents, home security has become so much more personal for us. It’s not just about things anymore — it’s about safety, comfort, and peace of mind. And smart tech like security cameras and video doorbells make all the difference.
So, whether you’re a homeowner or a renter, this National Home Security Month is the perfect time to check your setup, fix any weak spots, and take simple steps to make your home safer. Because when it comes to protecting the people and things you love most, there’s no better investment.
Home security is on our brains quite a lot at the moment. Our local Facebook page seems to be rife with thefts at the moment. We really need to get something like this. I love the added light element too! We’ve just bought some sensor lights for the front of the house, but this would be ideal!

The world is getting crazier and crazier. We have been giving our home a security makeover, and this looks perfect.
This is so perfect for our home! We’ve been looking at cameras, and this cordless version is just what we’ve been searching for.
This sounds like such a great option. I have 2 family members who have been burgled in the past. It’s horrible. So any extra security options are a must.
My mom needs to see this. We all need to be safe rather than regret at the end.
This is something we need to look at, I feel more vulnerable now I no longer have my husband here. Luckily our dog is a good security system at the moment
I will check Toucan cam. I love that it doesn’t have any subs and it is affordable. I need to get a few cams to cover all areas in my house. Thanks a lot for the review.
I do feel that the subscriptions feel like a scam. Thank you for these details on how important home secruity is in this day and age.
I do always worry about people breaking into our home so having a camera that doesn’t need wires is something that will work for me when we make it into our new home. I wouldn’t bother with fake cameras myself. I’d rather be reassured by a real one that can record and deter.
I think I’m the same, I’d rather have the back up of the real thing x
I need to look into some home security, I just haven’t been feeling as safe as I normally do for some reason ,maybe it’s because the days are getting darker earlier
I totally agree that home security is completely important. Theft can happen to anyone so minimizing the risks must be the first priority for all home owners.
Such great advice! I always worry about my aged parents and in-laws’ safety. I think I need to install the Toucan wireless cameras in their homes.
