How I Organise My Bank Accounts to Stay on Top of My Finances

Pile of coins on top of a banking book that says savings account

Let’s be real — trying to manage all your money from one single bank account can feel overwhelming. You get paid, the bills go out, savings and payments are made, and you make a few purchases and you’re wondering where your money has gone.

It took me a while  to realise that splitting my finances into multiple accounts made everything clearer. Now I know exactly what’s coming in, going out, and what’s actually mine to spend — and it’s made a huge difference.

Here’s how I organise my bank accounts to keep things simple, tidy, and stress-free.

1. Main joint account – For bills only

My salary lands here, and from this account, I automate all of our household fixed expenses including:

Me and Luke combine our income as it works best for us, so my salary covers all of the fixed expenses. So this account rarely ever gets touched other than when I’m checking expenses. This way it doesn’t matter when bills come out the money is in there.

2. Secondary joint account

We have a secondary joint account with Monzo which is where our food money goes each week. This way when we do to the grocery shop the money is always there and we know how much we have to spend.

We also have all of our household sinking pots attached to this account so we can both see them whenever we want.

3. Spending account – Everyday purchases

Each week me and Luke get spending money so we each have our own spending account (both with Monzo). This is totally up to us what we use this for.

I have a bunch of regular savings which go into pots (see below), and then my general spending happens here. Again I always know how much is in here and how much I can spend.

Once this account’s empty, it’s empty — no dipping into other funds. It keeps me honest and helps me rein in those random impulse purchases that used to sneak through unnoticed.

4. Short-term pots – For sinking funds

Within both our joint Monzo account and my personal one, I use pots for mini goals and recurring expenses that don’t happen monthly.

For our joint sinking funds this includes:

For my personal sinking funds it includes:

These pots get added to either weekly or monthly so when the time comes, the money is already there. No surprises, no panic.

Organising my bank accounts keeps me on track

This system might sound like a lot, but honestly — once it’s set up, it runs itself. I probably spend 10–15 minutes a week checking in, and that’s it. Having separate accounts helps reduce the financial stress that used to come from everything being lumped together.

If you’ve ever looked at your bank balance mid-month and thought, “Where did all my money go?” — consider giving this a try.

Do you use multiple accounts or stick to one?

Having multiple accounts like that is such a smart way to keep everything organized and easily trackable. I have to start doing that!

Having different accounts for different uses is so smart. Our money is just all in one big pot. O_o

I’m glad you’ve managed to something that works well for you both. We only have the one joint account for the mortgage and bills – which people are always shocked by – We’re very much whats mine is yours etc, but we still primarily use our own accounts. I don’t know why, but it’s always worked for us (been together 15 years) so we just roll with it.

I love how organised you are. In our home, I am the one who is more organised with money and bills. We tried a joint account but for us it didn’t work as my other half isn’t very good with money. I do have my own seperate accounts which I keep in check.

I have had to resort my accounts this year. Going from joint to single and although I am quite savvy this has floored me and I am just sorting things out properly

I love how you are so organised when it comes to money. It’s great that you have opened savings pots for specific things as that can help you budget more easily and know where you are when looking to purchase items for which that money in that pot is intended.

It is so interesting to hear how you use your different bank accounts! We have a joint account just for bills / household, which really helps us organise ourselves.
