Bank switching offers have become increasingly popular in recent years. Loads of banks offer cash incentives — sometimes £100, £150, or even more — just for moving your current account. On the surface, it sounds like easy money. But are these offers actually worth it?
The short answer: it depends on your situation and how you approach it.
Bank switching offers are incentives provided by banks to encourage new customers to move their current account. To qualify, you usually need to:
Once you meet the criteria, you’ll receive a cash bonus.
But the criteria is different from bank to bank. I had a Nationwide account from a previous bank switch that had one standing order in and that I used to save. I recently did a switch to Natwest and managed to bag £150 within a week.
And I’m so happy I switched because Natwest has savings pots like Monzo so I can make a lot of use of the account.
The biggest advantage is obvious: free money.
If you’re organised and meet the requirements, bank switching can be a simple way to earn extra cash. For some people, regularly switching accounts can bring in a few hundred pounds a year. Although I wouldn’t recommend doing it too often as it affects your credit score. I usually do it once a year max.
Doing a switch may get you access to better banking features or apps, lower fees or better customer service depending on where you switch to. For example a few years ago I wanted to switch my Halifax account to a joint account but you had to go into branch and it was a palava. In the end I switched to HSBC where I got a joint account and a better app with more functionality.
While the rewards are appealing, there are a few things to keep in mind.
Firstly, switching banks takes effort. Even though the process is streamlined, you still need to keep track of switching requirements to ensure you don’t miss any conditions. You’ll also want to keep a check on any standing orders and direct debits to check they’ve switched correctly.
There’s also the potential impact on your credit file. While switching itself doesn’t usually harm your score significantly, opening and closing accounts frequently may look negatively.
Finally, not all accounts are worth switching to long-term. Some banks offer attractive bonuses but may not suit your day-to-day needs.
Bank switching offers are most worthwhile if:
For people who enjoy optimising their finances, it can be a useful strategy.
Bank switching offers can be a great way to earn extra money, but they’re not completely free.
They require time, organisation, and a bit of effort. If approached strategically, they can be worthwhile. But if they add stress or complexity to your finances, they may not be the best fit.
Ultimately, the best bank account isn’t the one with the biggest bonus; it’s the one that supports your everyday financial habits.
I had no idea that you could do that! I will check if there are any similar offers around, this is soooooo cool and would help me a lot actually.
These are great tips. There are a lot of temptnig offers out there, but you have to be on your toes. You need to know what you’re really getting.
Ohh 100% and you’ve got to know if it’s right for you x
This is such a great post! I agree with Beth, you really have to be alert and know what you are dealing with but, this is some really good information that may help someone seeking to switch.
This is something I’ve just started to look into. My friend has switched annually for years now and makes a tidy sum each time.
In my opinion, we can switch from one bank to another when we are sure that it’ll be truly beneficial for us in the long run. Thank you so much for educating about it more thoroughly.
I have often seen good incentives, such as the free money but I have never taken any of these offers up. I might look into some but I am pretty happy with my bank.
I’ve probably done about 4 over the past 3-5 years and it’s great for a little boost. But I wouldn’t switch away from something that I know works really well x
I have also felt these offers were a little strange! What an interesting break down.
It is interesting how changing your accounts can lead to extra money or even a better app for managing your daily finances.
This is a great read. Many of us don’t realize how important it is to bank with an institution you actually like. Banks are a huge part of our lives. Finding what fits is a must.
