Over the past eighteen months’s the world seems to have gone Copenhagen mad with everyone and their mothers heading over the Scandi heaven to explore the beauty of the city and buy into the Hygge obsession. I first went to Copenhagen in October 2015 and then returned to the city twice last year after falling in love. There’s something unique about the city and it feels so comfortable, one of my trips last year I headed here for a weekend on my own and I felt absolutely fine roaming the streets on my own.
I’d definitely recommend getting a Copenhagen Card if you visit the city as not only does it cover all your trains (including from the airport) all of the activities below which you have to pay for are included. In the city there’s so much you can explore but here are some of the top things you need to do on your visit to the city:
Hans Christian Anderson came from Copenhagen and so the fairy tale theme is prevalent throughout. The Little Mermaid statue sits on the coastline and is a lovely walk up from Osterport Station which passes plenty of other stunning statues. The Little Mermaid isn’t massive and it can get pretty crowded so it’s worth heading here early in the morning for the best photo ops.
The largest aquarium in Northern Europe is located in Copenhagen, Den Bla Planet. There’s so much to see there with some huge tanks, but there’s also a pretty great penguin enclosure outside where there are some beautiful seating areas surrounded by water so make sure you take a picnic if you go.
I’m jumping into my favourite part of the city first and that’s the amusement park located right in the middle of the city and it’s the second oldest in the whole world. A lot of people say that Walt Disney took inspiration from Tivoli for the Disneyland Parks. Not only are there awesome rides throughout but there’s beautiful gardens, places to explore and the cities little market stalls. They dress for the seasons so when I’ve been during both Halloween and Christmas it’s been absolutely stunning but it’s just as pretty during the Spring and Summer months. At night the whole place looks magical with light shows and stunning backdrops
Freetown Christiania is a place like no other and is well worth exploring. The area is a green and car-free neighbourhood established in the ’70s by some hippies who wanted to develop their own set of rules. The area is a mixture of houses, workshops, art galleries, organic cafes and some beautiful areas to explore although in a lot of areas you aren’t allowed to take photographs, mainly due to the cannabis dealing which happens in Christiania but is still illegal in Denmark. For me, the main thing was the artwork which adorns everywhere you look, but there are so many great places to eat especially if you’re vegetarian/ vegan.
I am a huge fan of zoos and always love visiting them in other countries. Berlin zoo has always been my number one but Copenhagen’s zoo definitely crept to my number two spot as their selection of animals was amazing and they were all easy to spot and not hidden away which is always a shame at some zoos. I think I spent about an hour just watching the monkeys when I went but it was a great way to spend a few hours.
If you want some more high views of the city head up the rounded Rundetaarn Tower which offers views over the more central part of the city showing the palaces and cathedrals which hog a lot of the skyline. The inside is a sloped walk so it seems like a long way to reach the top even though the tower itself isn’t really that high.
Opposite Freetown Christiania, there’s a stunning church with high rising gold and black tower which is hard to miss. You can climb right to the top of the tower for some amazing views over the city which is worth the narrow single-file stairs to reach the top. Beware though they can be steep in places and the walk won’t be easy especially when it’s busy, it is well worth it.
Carlsberg is made in Copenhagen so it would be rude to not visit the factory. Considering that I am not a beer drinker I still found the factory very interesting to see how beer is made and look at the massive bottle collection which is borderline ridiculous. With your ticket, you can get two free beers, or soft drinks so it’s well worth a visit.
The Hans Christian Anderson museum might be small and a little hidden away but it’s an interesting look at his life and some of the wonderful stories that he was responsible for creating such as Thumbelina, The Ugly Duckling, The Little Mermaid and The Princess and The Pea among others (much more than I ever knew he had written).

I didn’t realise there was so much to do in Copenhagen but you’ve put it on the map for me! I’d love to visit the aquarium and drink some Carlsberg haha
Copenhagen sounds so lovely and it looks like there was a lot to do. It is definitely on my bucket list.
One thing about traveling about Europe, you’re never too far from other countries. I can see why you guys are always visiting.
I’m DESPERATE to visit Copenhagen. Hubby is going next year to run the marathon but I can’t go with him as it’s in school time! I’ll keep hold of this list in case I ever manage to get there!
Oh I would love to go to Copenhagen! The little mermaid statue would be a huge hit with my girls, it’s their favourite film!
I think i would most definitely have t visit the Carlsberg factory! The Little Mermaid Statue looks great too!
I really want to go to see that mermaid statue that would be great as well as to visit the aquarium. I have been to Tivoli world in Spain but didn’t realise they had them else where.
ive never been here but its nice to know there are a few interesting sites and things to do if we ever do decide
You’ve summed up Copenhagen beautifully! I didn’t enjoy Christiana, when we walked down the no photo bit I felt the dealers were quite abrupt and aggressive (we weren’t buying btw lol). I like the idea of it, but maybe we went on a more ‘shady’ day. x
Copenhagen looks like such an amazing place to visit! I’ve heard about the little mermaid statue before, but the other things were pretty new to me. I’d love to visit myself one day š
Louise x
I really want to see the Little Mermaid statue and the Hans Christian Anderson museum sounds fascinating
Great guide…i would love the zoo and the aquarium
A great list – I’ve never been but would love to visit!
I went to Copenhagen last year and loved it, been planning to go back as I did not see everything I wanted to see including the little mermaid. Lovely list you’ve compiled
Never knew that there was a Little Mermaid statue!
The aquarium and zoo would be popular choices with my daughters – I’d love to visit Copenhagen one day š
Oh Rhian, youāre giving me such travel envy right now!
My husband has a china figurine of the Little Mermaid statue. It is a treasured possession of his and I know he would love to visit the real thing one day. It is on my list too after seeing these shots.
I never realised there was actually so much to do in Copenhagen, it sounds so appealing. I’m definitely going to put it on my list of places to visit x
Never been to Copenhagen before but I’d definitely go to their aquarium first. Though the little mermaid statue and the zoo would be cool too.
Copenhagen is one of my favourite places, I’d love to go back in Summer as Tivoli isn’t open in Winter and I’ve still not been! The Rundetaarn was amazing, we avoided the zoo though as they’ve had a lot of bad press and I don’t agree with how they treat their animals xo
I would love to visit the Hans Christian Anderson Museum! I grew up with those stories!
I want to do a lot more travelling next year and from reading this Copenhagen looks great! I’ll have to add it to my bucket list of places I want to visit.
Copenhagen is on my list to visit soon. I’ve got friends who live there and would love to do some sightseeing in the city.
Looks like there’s a lot to do, I hadn’t considered visiting Copenhagen but maybe it’s worth a quick city break.
I have never been to Copenhagen before and if I’m honest, had never really considered adding it to my places to visit before. But there seems like LOADS of things to do, so I may just have to add it to that list of mine…
