Things I’ve Leant While Dressing For The Summer

Monochrome Asos Polka Dot Dress

I think this summer has been the longest period of good weather this country has had within my whole life. I can’t think of another time when we’ve had such continuously good weather. On one hand it’s great as everyone is more cheery and positive in the sunshine and it’s nice to have a change from my jeans and a t shirt attire but I have noticed that dressing for the summer isn’t always easy. Here are some things I’ve learnt over the summer period:

My wardrobe is reliant on jeans

I didn’t realise quite how much my wardrobe revolved around jeans until the summer hit in and I blankly stared into my wardrobe. I have loads of pairs of jeans in a variety of shapes and colours including some jeans from esprit but there’s just no option to wear them as it’s too hot. I didn’t quite realise until the sun continued that I only had limited non jeans items as the weather has never been this consistently good.

Midi skirts are a god send

A good midi skirt can be both comfortable for everyday wear to work as you don’t have to worry about flashing people while wearing a teeny tiny skirt but they’re still light and airy. I have been living in a black and white polka dot skirt which I bought from ASOS as it’s lightweight and goes with pretty much any colour. Midi skirts are perfect for dressing for the summer weather whether you have a smart or casual dress code at work.

Wearing sandals can cause havoc on your feet

Other than on holiday and the odd summer day we’ve had in previous years I’ve not worn a lot of sandals as I am much more of a Vans kind of girl. But having worn sandals almost exclusively for the past 6 weeks I have noticed how bad my feet have become with hard skin on the heels and just general marks and wear that I’d never normally get when wearing socks and trainers. I’ve had to invest in a tool to smooth down my heels as they’re not the most comfortable at the moment.

I am not as afraid of colour as I thought I was

Previously I’ve pretty much loved in black clothing but this summer I’ve started to experiment a little more and I’m actually loving having a bit of colour in my life. Mustard is a huge part of my wardrobe this summer as it’s a nice bright shade which isn’t too in your face, plus when you have a bit of a tan it looks great. I’ve taken to just ordering clothes I like that I wouldn’t usually wear just to see what they’re like and I’ve surprised myself with what I’m keeping from online orders making dressing for the summer a bit more colourful.

Shorts under a dress/ skirt are a must

As a larger girl chaffing is the bane of my life so I have got both a pair of running shorts from Primark and a pair of Chaffree shorts which I wear under pretty much any dress or skirt. The Chaffree shorts are great for anything knee length or longer as they’re breathable, stop you from sweating too much and cover the tops of your legs enough to prevent any form of chaffing. I’ve written about the Chaffree shorts in more detail in this post if you want to read more.

I know exactly what you mean about jeans! I’ve been melting in them this Summer and it’s proven how little I have to wear when the sun does make an appearance and, witg the great Summer we’ve been having – I don’t have enough cool clothes. I’ve mostly been wearing printed dresses this Summer! I’ll definitely check out the shorts you’ve mentioned here to wear underneath them. Great post. 🙂
