I am one of these people who loves watching DIY and hack videos on YouTube and getting loads of really cool ideas of how to upcycle and change products to be exactly like I am. But the crux of it is I am not very handy or great at DIY and also I’m just a bit lazy so anything I tend to do is pretty easy and simple so here are some of the things I’ve done doing lately which I promise anyone can do.
The main thing I like to do is just spray paint items to make them look better and gold is what I’ve done the most in. I bought a plan white trex statue from Asda because I thought it looked really cute although quite plain and cheap but with a layer of gold spray paint it looks so much more expensive and fits with the colour scheme in my bedroom.
Another item which I bought and spray painted was this glass jar from Flying Tiger. I don’t have an image of what it looked like before but it was plain glass with a cork lid but I liked the size of it to use as a make up brush holder. My room is pretty cluttered and overwhelming anyway so I liked the idea of making the brushes less visible so I sprayed the whole thing gold and it fits on top of my Alex drawers perfectly.
In the same vain I knew I wanted a small pot on my dressing table to store hair clips, pins and the small remote for my light but most of the ones I found just weren’t the right size or shape so when I saw these Marmalade jars from Duerrs I knew they were what I wanted. The first thing I did was empty out the pot and peel off the label then it was time to pop it in the dishwasher to make sure all the marmalade was out and it didn’t have a scent. Then it was just a case of spraying it and voila it looks pretty great I think.
The next thing I did was a bit more of a DIY task and less of a ‘let’s just add gold spray paint to everything’. When I got my Alex drawers I bought a lot of acrylic storage but could never find anything I was happy with for my eyeshadow palettes as I wanted to have them standing up so I decided to DIY something. I had bought a few sample marble tiles from Walls & Floors so decided to use this as a base and hot glued a number of large beads which I got from Hobby Craft to the tile with enough space between each one for an eyeshadow palette to stand. Once I left the glue to dry it was just time to add it into my drawer and place the palettes within the slots. I am so happy with how this turned out and plan on doing another smaller one for my other palettes.
The final mini DIY I have done lately is this small rope basket. Now this was my first attempt so it’s not the neatest but I plan on doing this again now I have the knack for it. I picked up the rope for £1 in The Range and just used my glue gun to wrap the rope around to create the little basket. I did a flat bottom coming out as large as I wanted the basket (although mine is a little wonky) and then I built up the sides to add height gluing it down as I went. I did end up with glue on my fingers but for just £1 it looks like it’s worth so much more.

I also loving checking out the DIYs on YouTube and also getting some done. From your picks, I love that you gold spray things to make them look golden. They look so beautiful and expensive in golden!
To be honest I don’t really do much in the way of diy in the home. I leave that to the hubby as I don’t have the time myself. Those programmes must be great to watch and get some lovely ideas.
I actual love DIYs, they can take a little longer but they usually work out more cost effective and look so much nicer!
I have to admit it has been forever since I did some DIYs, my shakes put pay to most of them, but I may have to try these as they may just be within my capabilities! Thank you.
I love your idea, although I have not done any DIY in my life. But, it looks like fun and you can make pretty cool stuff with it.
You had me at lazy! I love little DIY crafts that are super easy to make. These are such great ideas indeed!
You are so creative! I love how you have made a simple item like a jar so unique and special. You have such a gift
I’m similar in that I always watch diy videos and come up with crazy idea but then I never actually do them! These are brilliant ideas! I need to try some out!
That spray-painting job looks so clean. Nice color choice too! And I want to learn how to make a rope basket. Very creative pieces you’ve made!
Now hubby works in a DIY store I leave it all to him – he seems to know it all these days 😉
I am pretty naff at this kind of thing, but I do think they look lovely. So amazing what a little spray paint can do 🙂
That’s so cool you came up with so many different small DIY crafts and projects. I do really love the rope basket. I am sure my daughter would love to have one of her own.
I love your ideas! I like to learn more DIYs and I am definitely trying this out! Thank you for sharing!
Love the idea of giving everything a “touch of gold.” I went through a brief DIY phase when I thought I was Bob the builder…I would buy secondhand wood items and refurbish them in my free time.
Omg! This post was just for me. I was looking for ways to organize my makeup. Love the way your DIY holders
Got so many ideas from this post and love doing diys too
Haha love what you did there with simple stuff. Especially loved the jar. It looks beautiful yet so functional!
Love the ideas of making useful things simply. Especially that drawer using eye shadow palette. Unique thing I saw.
Love this idea! The eye shadow palette drawer is perfect!
I used to love DIY when I rented my own place from reupholstery to wood work, to upcycling and modifying furniture. I loved it. I may have to try some mini DIYs like you’ve mentioned here to decorate my new room.
You can never go wrong with spray painting everything a color you’d like! What simple ways to make things so much nicer!
