Five Reasons Why You Should Stay At Holkham Estate

Holkham Estate

AD - This is a collaborative post but all thoughts and opinions are my own

Holkham Estate is a beautiful estate just off the coast of North Norfolk and has been home to royalty since 1609. You can visit Holkham Estate as a visitor but you can also stay on the grounds in one of four iconic parkland lodges. I am a huge fan of staycations and with me and Luke saving so much I’m always on the lookout for stunning locations in the UK that we can visit without the cost of going abroad. Here are some of the reasons why you should visit and stay at Holkham Estate.

You can take advantage of the estate

Holkham Hall sits in the centre of the estate with views over the 25,000-acres of historic parkland and woodland and you can take advantage of the estate. If you like cycling you can take your bikes and cycle around the grounds, or alternatively hire bikes in the courtyard. In the summer months, you can go to the lake and the area just looks stunning.

Wells-next-the-Sea beach

Just outside the walls of Holkham Park is the beautiful beach of Wells-next-the-Sea which has sweeping sands bordered by pine woods. The beach is dog friendly so if you’re bringing your pets with you the beach is a great place for a morning walk. Everything I have found online shows Wells-next-the-Sea as a charming coastal town where you can enjoy fresh seafood in the restaurants after taking a dip in the ocean.

The Triumphant Arch

Surroundings made famous by the media

Holkham Hall looks absolutely stunning and both the hall and the local area have appeared in several films and TV shows including The Duchess and Shakespeare In Love so if you love either of those you’re in for a treat. In 1999’s Shakespeare in Love Gwyneth Paltrow’s character gets washed up on the shores of Virginia but it’s actually the beaches of Holkham which appear. The Palladian Hall was used throughout 2008’s historical drama The Duchess with Keira Knightley which is the story of Aristocats and duchess’.

But the most exciting thing is the video for All Saint’s video ‘Pure Shores’ was filmed here which is pretty incredible!

You can explore the UK’s largest nature reserve

Holkham National Nature Reserve stretches out for about 3,706 hectares and you can spend hours or even days exploring the area by following footpaths around the nature reserve.

When I go away I love spending more time outdoors and walking so this would make a great day trip out just exploring.

The beautiful properties

I saved the best for last and the most important reason you should stay at Holkham Estate is the beautiful properties that you can stay in. The four lodges are each unique and sleep two people from the woodland hideaway of Plamers Folly, the Grade II listed gatehouse of Palmers Lodge, the South Lodge, and the Grade I listed Triumphal Arch.

The image at the top of this post is Triumphal Arch which is a Grade I listed building and designed by architect William Kent to impress travellers passing through the North Norfolk coast. In the arch you can see panoramic views across the estate with a spiral staircase leading from the kitchen and cloakroom up to the main room with a roll-top bath, king-sized bed, and open fire for you to put your feet up and unwind.

Have you ever been to North Norfolk?
