When I was first thinking about selling I pushed the thoughts about packing to the back of my mind as I know we have so much stuff in our flat that it’s set to be a daunting task. When we move we’ll be moving back in with my parents. This is so we can do some extra savings for 6-12 months, therefore, we will be taking as much stuff as possible with us. But there are certain items of furniture and our huge Pop Vinyl collection among other bits which we’ll need to get a storage unit for. To keep costs down we’ll be putting some stuff at my Nan’s as well as we’re fortunate to be able to. But here are some ways we’re packing ahead of the move.
Deciding what we actually need to keep is a huge task. For example, there are some items like plates/ bowls and cutlery that we know we’ll want to buy new when we move in. We’ll take each room and section of the room separately and work out what we actually need at my parents. Then what we don’t need but want to keep, what we can sell/ pass on and what we can just throw away. The hope will be that there will be a chunk of things which won’t even leave the flat with us. Plus if we can make some extra money while we’re at it even better.
Before I started the process I broke down the entire flat into small sections such as ‘chest of drawers’, ‘under the bed’, ‘kitchen food cupboards’ etc. This helped to keep each section manageable and more defined. Each night after work or at the weekends when I have the chance I’m tackling one section at a time. One of the things I’ve found the hardest is items I’ve been given as gifts with a difference can be tough to part with due to the sentimental value. I know for us going forward when we move into our house the presents that me and Luke will buy each other will become more and more practical as the years go on so stuff from Coopers of Stortford would be very practical.
One of the biggest areas of mine is my clothing and shoe collections which are pretty big even though I have regular clear outs. All of my everyday items which I wear a lot of will come to my parents along with essentials. But I might have to have a suitcase or so of items which are stored in another room of my parent’s house as I don’t know how long we’ll be there like jumpers and party outfits in case we’re there next December.
Then my plan (or hope) is that I’ll only have one box in the storage unit of items which I decide to keep in the hope that I lose weight. There’s no point hanging on to too many unrealistic items.
Following on from the above two points anything which we’re going to get rid of which we think we may be able to sell will be coming to a car boot sale with us. I did one with my parents last October and it was pretty successful so I’m hoping we can make a similar amount of money. But it’s not all about the money, I hate the idea of throwing things away which someone else can make use of so this means others can enjoy items I no longer need/ want. I have also been selling some larger/ more specialist items online such as jewellery and camera equipment.
Anything which doesn’t sell after we do 1 or 2 car boot sales will go to the charity shop as it means someone else can enjoy it and it saves me just throwing it out.
Anything which we don’t urgently need at that moment but we know we’re taking with us can be moved ahead of time to make the actual move go as smoothly as possible. We know that both of our chest of drawers will be coming and we only really need one at the moment so one has already made its way into my parent’s house, and we have some Kallax shelves which can also be moved. I know moving day/ week will be stressful enough so anything we can do ahead of time to make things easier will be a blessing.

I despise moving. We may be looking at moving again in a few months and I am dreading it!!!
Sometimes it feels like I’ll never finish streamlining my clothes! Fluctuating weight a lot makes it a very tough and emotional job, but clothes take up so much space! Glad that vinyl collection is getting the love it deserves, I’m the same way about mine!
It sounds like you have everything under control, I hate packing to move as there always seems to be so much to do and organise x
Ugh I hate packing too! The last time we moved I was 8 months pregnant and I left it right up til the last minute! Aggh!
I am curious to know how big is your shoes collection ? :))))) I LOVE SHOES, this is why I ask. I moved a lot when I was younger and it was always exciting but now I am kind of terrified to move.
I hate moving. it’s like “yay! I finally like my home’ and BAM! time to move on. Your tips ae brilliant but I can’t help myself and be as wise as you are
Frankly, I don’t like packing and unpacking. It takes so much time and planning.
Good luck with the packing, its not easy but I think it sounds like you have it under control! Great idea to declutter as you go. We moved five years ago to our forever house. The bit I didn’t enjoy was changing over all the correspondence! x
Such an amazing idea when moving home, I’ve agree with everything you’ve cited here and they are all great stuff to do. Especially the “Car Boot Sale”, it’s great to sell things that others are needed while gaining something from it.
I have moved more times than I care to count and it always seems like an ordeal. However, it really does help to be prepared!
I hate to move out because it requires lot of stuff to pack. You have listed great ideas for moving out.
I know the feeling . I always try to plan in advance before moving to make it as efficient as possible but always fail miserably
Very helpful tips on moving out! It’s always easier to transfer your belongings in small portions over time, you can really see what fits where and what needs to be put away.
Moving is something I hate most, and wishing that I own a huge truck to service all of it. It is a challenge, and gives me an awesome relieve when I finished settling in for the next few weeks,
I hate moving…. As much as i wanted to leave my flat, I can’t.. I hate packing and looking for a new place is a lil hard.
I moved 6 months back and it was a great experience to be honest. Got rid of so much stuff, some that i had even forgotten i had!!
