Valentines Day is one of those holidays that people have pretty mixed opinions about, some people embrace it as a day to show someone how much you care, whereas others see it as a corporate made holiday to make money. I am in both fields, I do think it’s a way for card companies to make money just after Christmas and sometimes it can feel too much, but at the same time, I love being able to celebrate love. Yes you should be showing people you care about them all year round and this is something I embrace full on but it’s a nice excuse for some flowers and a nice meal out.
2019 will be mine and Luke’s third Valentines Day together and we always love doing something for the day, generally on the day itself that will be a nice fancy meal as an excuse to dress up and eat good food is a winner in our eyes. But doing an activity is always nice, last year we went Axe Throwing and on a Formula 1 simulation which was so much fun and this year we’ve got our sights set on a pop up from The Luna Cinema.
They’re partnering with the Natural History Museum to bring the pop-up cinema to the museum where on 14th, 15th and 16th February you can pop along and watch a movie in the main hall under the 25-metre long skeleton of ‘Hope’ the blue whale. We’re hoping to do Kill Bill on Friday evening but there also rom com’s and other movies perfect for Anti- Valentine’s empowerment. Grab your tickets quickly before they sell out!
Of course, you can’t do Valentines Day without a card and The Card Factory has such a good collection of them, you don’t have to spend loads of money to get something special.
I think skincare and pampering gifts are such a nice idea as Valentines Day gifts as they’re things to help people have some me time and Luke certainly doesn’t go out and buy himself skincare. The Men-U travel kit* (£34.95) is a great option for us this year as we’re heading on holiday in Mid-March so grabbing some nice travel sized bits works well for us. Included in the set is a Daily Refresh Shampoo to clean, refresh and moisturise the hair, while the Citrus & Mint Shower Gel does the same for the body and it smells amazing.
There is a mini skin refresher kit which includes a Shave Crème to stop irritation and keep skin safe when shaving, there’s also a mini Facial Wash and a Skin Refresh Gel which are the perfect size to take away on holiday. I know I have loads of mini skincare items as I can’t stop myself but they’re harder to find for men. The final item included is a Liquifflex which is a hair styling and hold product which is really weightless, Luke has used this before and it adds body and volume to the hair without setting it or making it hard.
A brand I’ve just been introduced to which do some harder to find men’s products is Black Leopard. I have the Eye Cream* (£21.95) and the Face Scrub* (£21.95). Most ladies probably use an eye cream on a daily basis and I’ve never seen one targeted specifically to men, although I’ve probably not looked hard enough. This cream is designed to hydrate under the eyes, stop aging, reduce puffiness and lighten dark circles which is big talk from a small bottle.
The face scrub is made with Black Rice as the exfoliate and is designed to be used 2 to 3 times max to treat the face. The scrub will help to unclog pores, clean the skin and reduce breakouts, and although Luke’s skin is really good I’m sure if he ever got rid of his beard the skin underneath probably wouldn’t be in the best condition so this would be great for use there.
If you’re for a super indulgent gift for the man in your love how about this Bayis and Harding set which comes in a beautiful weekend bag? The Men’s Black Pepper & Ginseng Weekend Bag* (£39.99) comes with a 200ml shower gel, 150g soap, 100ml hair & body wash, 100ml body lotion and 50ml aftershave balm in the gorgeous Black Pepper and Ginseng scent which is musky and such a manly scent that I love.
The travel bag itself is such a good size and would make a great carry on bag for the plane if you’re going on holiday but also as a nice holdall if you’re going away overnight as it has enough room for toiletaries, clothes and your cables/ tech.
I am a huge fan of fruity scents and tend to opt for these with my bathing products so one of my favourite womens scent’s is the Sweet Mandarin & Grapefruit which comes in this bathing set* (£14.99) including 500ml body wash, 500ml body lotion, 100g bath soak crystals and a body polisher all in the same scent. The scent is fresh and sweet but isn’t too strong which is just what I need first thing in the morning, something to wake me up!
The body polisher is really pretty as well as it has the matching gold stripe along with it which is really pretty. Baylis and Harding do a whole range of gift sets which you can check out here.
If you’re doing Valentines Day a bit more low key you can’t beat a box of Haribo Heart Throbs* which you can buy at Asda and Sainbury’s. The white and red gummy hearts are so morish be warned once you open the box you won’t want to put them down (or maybe that’s just me?!)
You can’t go wrong with foodie gifts but there’s so much more choice than just your usual box of chocolates so these gummies make a great alternative.
I know an awful lot of men who are hardcore coffee drinkers so some fancy coffee is always a good shout. Extract Coffee started in 2007 with a mission to make coffee better for everyone; farmers, roasters, baristas and drinkers. So the team travel the world to source the best coffee which is toasted in Bristol, UK. I was sent through Dr Strangelove espresso* (£7.95) and the Original espresso* (£6.95) and they were so fresh they’d only been roasted a few days before they landed through my letterbox which is incredible, not like the stuff you see in supermarkets where you don’t know how long it may have been sitting there.
There are some really interesting blends that you can buy but if you fancy yourself as a bit of a barista you can spend the day in a coffee roastery learning. You’ll get a tour, a demo roast, coffee tasting and the chance to try your hand at pouring the perfect coffee and even some latte art.
I am a huge fan of fudge, so much so that a box like the one above wouldn’t last very long in my hands. Fudge Kitchen* do an assortment of freshly made fudge which is melt in the mouth soft and full of flavour. This would make a great alternative to a box of chocolates especially as there’s almost always a few chocolates in a box that no one likes but with four lovely fudge flavours you shouldn’t get that issue. The soft creamy texture is created by using all natural ingredients, and the Fudge Kitchen have been making fudge for over 35 years so they know their stuff.
When selected the four flavours will be chosen to complement each other and a lot of the fudges are specifically dairy-free which is even better, I have to admit when eating them you can’t tell the difference between one which does or doesn’t have dairy in it. My box contained Sea Salted Caramel which is one of the brands top selling fudge’s made with soya milk, Classic Chocolate which is vegan friendly and made with soya milk and cocoa fudge, Icy Vanilla Coconut which is much fresher and made with lots of cream and boiled coconut and the Belgian Chocolate Swirl.
You can’t beat a good personalised gift to show how much you care at Valentines Day and this wooden you and me keyring* (£7) is a nice little reminder to show your other half some love. You can personalise it with any date so obviously, I opted for when me and Luke became a couple. The actual keyring is really good quality with a good clip which can be added to your keys in seconds.
Next up are some sweets because who doesn’t love a gummy heart?! This personlised treat jar* (£9.99) can be personalised with your initials surrounded by hearts so it’s very stereotypical when it comes to Valentines Day gifts. Something like this is really nice as once you’ve finished the sweets inside you can keep it and refill it with treats or anything else you may want to use it for, although I had to get Luke to hide ours as I was eating them an alarming rate *oops*
If you have a someone in your life who loves perfume (and who doesn’t really?!) then the chance to make a unique perfume would be a great gift. The Perfume Studio specialise in tailor-made fragrances and have created hundreds of different combinations of his and hers. You can go to one of the companies locations and experience it for yourself where you can blend, name and take home a unique scent of your own, or you can do what I did and get the at home kit. The Exotic Collection* (£49) is the variation I have which includes fruity, exotic floral, spicy, musky, amber and gourmand scents inside.
I’m sure we’ve all been there where we’ve got loads of different scents we love but wish we could take the best notes of each one and combine them together, but now you can. You can smell all the variations and choose which ones to mix together in what quantities for example two parts fruity, one part gourmand and one part musky. The actual process of mixing is really easy and the instructions are super straight forward so you’ll have a truly unique blended scent in no time at all.

There are so many lovely ideas but we just do cards – I don’t need another commercialised holiday so soon after Christmas!
Some lovely ideas here – wish someone would treat me to a couple of them… but sadly I don’t have a partner at the moment, and most of my friends are coupled up – so I’ll be spending Valentine’s Day alone this year x
Fab ideas here! You can’t go wrong with sweets and chocolates when you’re all out of other ideas!
