Proms seem like such an American thing but for most 16 year old’s who have just finished their GCSE exams it’s a bit of a rite of passage. I remember my Year 11 prom day quite vividly even though it was actually almost 13 years ago which in itself is very scary.
Looking for a dress was always one of the most exciting parts and I remember choosing a stunning plum long line dress from the bridesmaid section of Marks and Spencer as back then so few retailers did prom appropriate clothing which wasn’t hundreds of pounds. The dress was so pretty with a zip along the side and despite the fact that I was always a bit chunky it looks really nice, this was all about 4 months before prom. So naturally a few weeks before the big day I tried it on again but my boobs (and probably my belly) had grown meaning the zip wouldn’t do up, not even close so I was left dress less. Thankfully the lovely team at our local M&S allowed me to swap the dress despite it being well over the 30 days and while I didn’t get the dress of dreams I did at least get one which fit.
On the day of our prom me and my group of friends all got together at my parents house to get ready and I remember how fun the whole process was. It was the first time we had all been together getting dressed up, there was a lot going on with about seven girls all trying to their hair and makeup. I remember my parents being the ‘official’ photographers and going through all the angles to get the best photos, including one where they leant out of our bathroom window to get an above shot. This was before the days of the style you get with wedding photos or other great photography techniques.
Once we had bundled into our limo we had a drive around our local area before going to the hotel where it was being held and to be honest from the moment we got there I don’t remember a lot about the actual prom. We were all very well behaved and unlike a lot of people there we hadn’t had a sneaky drink beforehand and when a lot of people were off to post prom parties we were all heading home to get undressed and head to bed. Oh what the Rock’N’Roll lives we lead as teenagers.
We actually did have a second prom in Year 13 when we finished our A Levels but this was totally different as it was on a boat out on the Thames, everyone could drink and the attire was more cocktail dresses as opposed to floor length gowns.
Obviously fashion and trends have changed a lot between 2006 and now and what I like now I may not have liked then but if I did prom over again now I think I’d opt for a lighter colour, or something with stones or something pretty on it. Click here if you’re looking for a prom or similar dress.

Proms weren’t a think when I left school but my teen will be having her prom in a few months time and she is looking forward to it as long as she can find the perfect dress. She’s not usually a dress wearer so she’s quite picky. Eek x
We never had proms at out School so gutted as the dresses are so amazing and love the dark blue one 🙂
I only had a prom in year 6! I was so young then so didn’t really care about what to wear!
I never went to my prom. I thought I was too cool for that! I do love those dresses though! I think I need them all.
Ah your parents sound amazing, doing everything for the perfect shot! I didn’t have a prom, I feel like I missed out!!
I have never been to a prom. I don’t think our school actually DID them when I was in school. But I love the idea that my children will get to go to theirs.
I don’t remember much about my prom either, I do know that it was at a hotel and that I shared a taxi with a few colleagues living in the same neighborhood to go there. I remember my dress was purple but that’s about it. 🙂
The dark prom dress is so similar to my friends daughters dress, intact I think it is the same one. Beautiful
Didn’t have proms in my day. You were lucky if you had a school disco!
We didn’t have a prom, does that show how old I am?
Oh gosh, my prom days were so long ago, I can’t even remember what it was that I wore LOL! These dresses are gorgeous x
I much prefer the cocktail style gowns to the full on ball gowns that were around when I had my prom… I didnt even go I went to Tenerife with my mate instead! xxx
