One of the things I love most about London is the slightly more unusual things you do or normal things you can do in more unconventional locations. So when an email landed in my inbox about Luna Cinema doing a selection of Valentine’s Day screenings at the Natural History Museum I was instantly drawn in. The sleepover at the Natural History Museum has been on my bucket list for a long time but it’s pretty pricey so going in after-hours and watching a movie seemed like the next best thing.
Luna Cinema did a sell-out season of Halloween screenings and came back with three evenings at The Natural History Museum with some traditional and not-so-traditional Valentine’s Day films from The Notebook to Kill Bill. The later movie is what we went to see at 7 pm on Friday 15th February mainly because we had plans on Valentine’s Day itself and it was the one I could convince Luke to see.
Before I talk about the event itself if you missed out Luna Cinema is bringing back some Spring screenings over 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th March where you can see a whole range of films including Jurassic Park and Night at the Museum, both very apt for the location.
As the museum closes just before 6 pm you had to enter while the main entrances were shut which is my only criticism of the night as there’s no information on either the Luna Cinema or The Natural History Museum website about how to enter. We tried the main entrance at the front and then walked around towards The Science Museum but nothing and no signs. Thankfully we managed to find some security who told us to go right the way around the other side of the building, so thankfully we were early but I totally understand why some people ended up walking in a few minutes after the movie started. When you’re looking at the main entrance if you head to the left then this is the way in.
Now when you go get inside you’re right near the impressive Hintze Hall where the 25m long Blue Whale skeleton ‘Hope’ lives which is where the movie happens. Walking into that room never ceases to amaze me, the sheer size of the whale hanging from the ceiling and just how stunning the room itself is. George Wood founder of The Luna Cinema agrees about the impressive location “Apart from anything else the Hintze Hall is without doubt one of the most iconic spaces in London in which you can experience a classic film on the big screen.”
You can grab a free bag of popcorn as you enter but there’s also a bar where you can grab drinks and additional snacks to add to your movie going experience. Lines of chairs were put in the big hall and we grabbed our front row seat to watch Kill Bill. Sometimes with movie showings in unusual locations, the sound can be a bit off but it was spot on for the movie, and I definitely jumped during a few of the gun shot scenes as it was my first time seeing the movie.
With the Valentines screenings, you could access the ‘Life after Dark’ exhibition by showing your ticket, and those going to the Spring showings can go into the ‘Wildlife Photographer of the Year’ exhibition before their screening as well which is a nice little extra.

Oh my goodness what an incredible place to get to go and see a movie! I so love the national history museum so seeing something spectacular there would be a real dream.
This is incredible! I really wish there was more like this round my way. I always feel so out of the loop living so far from London. Maybe Chatsworth House might do something like this as that is really close to us! Won’t be as impressive but still.
Oh! I had no idea they were showing movies at the Natural History Museum, that’s awesome! Do they have a natural history theme? That would be so much fun.
Wow, what a fantastic experience! Such an interesting place to do some screenings. Sounds like you had a great time.
This looks awesome, I think I have seen that Luna is coming to Lulworth Castle too, although it would be very cool to see a film in a museum
Oh wow how cool is this for a movie night! Looks like a fab evening out for sure xx

It sounds like such a great way of watching a movie in a very iconic setting. Love that you got the full movie experience with snacks and jumping out of your chair experiences!
This is definitely unusual and unconventional for sure, its unique and would make a perfect movie night out. Thanks for the other dates, need to look into this.
