I am a huge fan of escape rooms. There’s something totally thrilling about solving clues against the clock. So when Handmade Mysteries offered me to come along to a pub in Islington and try Poppa Plock’s Wonky Workshop I jumped at the chance.

I’ve done plenty before including AIM and Lock’d. I’ve even done Lady Chastity’s Reserve which is another escape room by Handmade Mysteries. Each room I’ve done has been vastly different from the other’s and it always amazes me how someone’s mind is clever enough to think of the whole concept.

We were booked into our escape room at 1 pm on the Sunday of Bank Holiday weekend. In London, temperatures were crazy warm, but thankfully the room didn’t get warm. And if it did we didn’t notice at all. Unlike a lot of escape rooms which are located in industrial estates/ warehouses, this one is above a pub. So a pretty perfect location. We arrived a little early and grabbed a drink. The Depot pub also does some great food so you can debrief after the room with a drink and some grub.

The theme around this room was pretty darn amazing. It’s based around Poppa Plonk’s toy workshop where he created Wynne, your guide for the game. Wynne tells a story of Poppa and his sidekick OKI (a ventriloquist’s dummy) who start to create a super robot called Roy. But during the process, OKI is locked up and Poppa Plonk passes away so they need help trying to build Roy. And that’s where the team task comes in.

One of the things I loved about this room was its direction. It wasn’t mindless running around looking for keys like some rooms are. We knew what we needed to do first, and while there were some tangents it always made sense roughly what we were looking for or what we needed to do next. I don’t want to reveal too much about the actual room and tasks but everything was really unique.

Other than the other Handmade Mysteries room it’s the only room I’ve been in which has been dark. You’re armed with torches when you go in which I originally thought was going to make things really hard. But it actually added to the mystery and excitement of the room. We did have to accept one or two clues from Wynne who was always on hand. But despite worrying about finishing we made it out in 50 minutes which we were really happy with.

If you’re looking for an escape room that is both fun inside, but also in a great location then check out The Depot in Islington. Location wise it’s a 5-minute walk from Caledonian Road station, but also pretty close to Kings Cross so it’s nice and central.

Have you ever done an escape room?

I’m going to admit it was a little freaky at points, where as there have been some I’ve done which have been far more like detective x

I love escape rooms too. My teens would be thrilled but it’s such a shame, this is for 18+.

There are loads of other ones which are great and suitable for under 18’s. I think it’s because it’s dark and it’s above a pub that they say 18+ x
