An Evening With Handmade Mysteries
I’ve been wanting to do an escape room style thing for ages, especially as Crystal Maze is obviously the best and needs to come back properly. So when the team at Handmade Mysteries offered for me and some friends to come along and give their ‘Lady Chastity’s Revenge’* room ago I jumped at the chance.
Handmade Mysteries offer their games in two pubs across London, one in East London which is in Hackney, and one in West London which we went to in Clapham. There’s also a location in Brighton if you’re more on the south coast. Firstly the Four Thieves Pub in Clapham where it is located is incredible, not only had they totally nailed their Halloween Decor (it was too dark to take photos sadly) but upstairs there is a games room with mini-golf, arcade games, remote-controlled cars, everything and it was so cool. I’ll definitely be going back again to take advantage of the other fun you can have there.
Now I don’t want to give too much away but with Lady Chastity’s Revenge the premise isn’t to solve clues to escape the room per se it’s to unlock something which could be your prize should you succeed. Gabriel is a character within the story and we had a lovely lady take on the role and she was amazing. I’ve read so many other reviews about the actors/ actresses who take on this part and all have said exactly how I feel. She stayed in character and gave the night a very spooky feel. Guiding us to a room off from the main pub we are given a slight backstory to the ‘game’ and told we have three chances for help from her and then the hour starts.
Now an hour might sound like a long but when it’s dark, smoky, you’re worried about things jumping out and trying to get your brain to work it goes very quickly. I won’t talk about the puzzles and clues etc but what I will say is everything is perfectly put together and absolutely everything has been thought about. The clues are so cryptic and clever you do need a bit of out-of-the-box thinking which might be why we weren’t that great as we thought a bit too laterally. You’ll find out a lot about you and your friends doing something like this, for example, who has the most active brain and who is the most fearless. I really wish we had been able to stay on in the room just to see if we could have solved the final clue but alas we will never know how it ends.
We might not have finished the task within the allocated hour, although we did get down to the final clue we had so much fun taking part, giggling and screaming throughout. I haven’t done any other rooms like this to compare but I can’t imagine how anything else can pinpoint so many details with their clues. A room like this is such a great way to spend an evening or weekend and a great team-building/ bonding experience.

This looks super fun! I’ve done Escape the Room twice in NYC but now I want to try this one in London! It looks even fancier!
This sounds like alot of fun. Something similar gas recently opened in Glasgow but i haven’t been yet!

This sounds like such a cool experience! An escape room just opened up near us but it’s the standard “find the clues and escape” variety.
This is something I would love to do one day but maybe not so close to halloween lol dark and spooky is not my cuppa lol

I haven’t tried an escape room but I’d absolutely love to… although as someone who is very scared of small spaces, I’m not sure I’d be able to manage it xxx

I love escape rooms! Spend years playing them online, absolutely love the Crystal Maze too! I went to one that had a Contagion theme. We had to find the cure to this virus but having entered the room exposed us to the deadly virus too and had to find it in an hour! it was amazing!!
