I am a huge fan of spa days. There is nothing better than a day/ afternoon of total relaxation. Taking a swim or seeing if I can last more than a minute in the sauna. Maybe having a treatment and generally chilling out. But there are no denying spa days can be pretty pricey, even if you find a deal. It’s definitely worth it for the occasional treat. But if you plan it right an at-home spa can be just as relaxing.
The main thing for me is choosing the best time to have a proper pamper session. Now I’m at my parents it would be a time when they’re away. By the time this post has gone live, they’ll just be returning from a 2 week holiday, so I’ve had some good time to play with. Having a calm and relaxing space is so important if you want to have an at-home spa/ pampering day.
I’ll always opt to try and push away technology. When I’m at an actual spa, phones are locked away and my laptop is safely at home. I’ll grab a book, or a magazine and do some reading. Although sometimes going against this and having a good movie to watch can be equally as relaxing.
To begin with I’ll do most of my normal skincare routine and have a good cleanse and exfoliate. At the moment my favourite cleansers have been the Blueberry Bounce Gentle Cleanser from Glow Recipe as it’s full of anti-oxidant blueberries and the gel-like formula leaves my skin feeling so fresh. I’ve also been loving the Kate Somerville Exfolikate cleanser which is great for when my face feels like it needs a bit of extra attention. Plus it smells so fresh.
When it comes to exfoliators I’m quite fickle. But as long as my skin feels smoother and fresher afterwards I’m happy. This will leave my skin clean and ready for some pampering action. Whenever I have a spa day I always try and have a facial as there’s something about the pampering of my face which makes me feel relaxed. Plus I love it when my skin looks healthy and glowy.
This is why a face mask is really important. If I’m having a real spa pamper day I will usually double mask. Starting with a peel-off or liquid mask like the gold and silver foil ones from Masque Bar*. The silver version is designed to brighten and soften the skin. And the gold version is designed to revitalise and moisturise the skin. But what I love about them is how easy they are to peel off afterwards. So there’s much less mess about.
In an ideal world, I’d have this mask on while sitting in the bath. But we don’t have a bath at my parents which saddens me deeply. In my old flat, I’d usually pop a hydrating hair mask on and wrap my hair up. I’d exfoliate my whole body, wash that off and then hop in the bath with a face mask on. As the gold and silver ones are peel-off you can easily pull this off while in the bubbles as you don’t need to wash it off your face.
Once the peel-off mask is off my face it’s time for a hit of hydration in the form of a sheet mask. I love a good sheet mask and love to travel with them as I find they’re great for when you’re away and your skincare might not be quite as extensive as it would be if you were at home.
The rose gold foil sheet mask* is super moisturising, plus it looks stunning. But then you’ve got the brightening sheet masks* which I love. I’m trying to incorporate more Vitamin C into my skincare routine and this sheet mask gives me a boost. As well as being really hydrating it’s designed to help minimise the appearance of dark spots and pigmentation to even out the complexion.
Long gone are the days when sheet masks were just for the face. Now you can get them for your hands, feet and lips. If I’m having a very indulgent day an exfoliating foot mask* is one of my favourite things to do. As much as anything it forces you to lay/ sit down and properly relax as it’s not advisable to walk around with the mask on. These ones need to stay on for 60-90 minutes, so the right amount of time to binge-watch an episode or two of your latest TV show obsession.
This one is one of the foot masks that will help remove rough skin and give you smoother feet over the few weeks following using it. Once the mask comes off, you rinse your feet in water. And then in about 4-7 days time, the rough skin on your feet will start peeling off. It sounds a little disgusting but it’s such a simple and pain-free way to exfoliate your feet.
I am doing everything I can to pay more attention to around my eyes as it’s an area I previously haven’t been great with. And these Hydro Cool Firming Eye Gels* from SKYN Iceland are so cooling and full of hydration. These gels are designed to get rid of tell-tale signs of fatigue, so in the lead up to Christmas when there will be parties and nights out they’ll come in very handy.
I get quite dark circles under my eyes even when I get loads of sleep so I do wear a lot of concealers there. So it does deserve a little more TLC as it’s such a delicate area. They’re a bit of an all in one eye mask cooling, soothing, getting rid of puffiness and brightening dark circles. So they’re a great add on to my spa routine. Another great thing about these is they actually stick to your face so you can move around in them if you want. But if I’m doing an at-home spa day I’m not going to be running around my house much.
I’ll leave a bit of a gap before putting anything else on my face. But next up is a bit more TLC for my eyes in the form of an Under- Eye Illuminator* to restore and revitalise my poor eyes. This is such a cooling gel-like cream which is meant to help neutralise dark circles and generally make you look well-rested. I have been using this most nights for a few weeks now and I do find in the mornings my under eyes look a bit lighter and the skin feels a bit bouncier.
As you can see having an at-home spa day can give your skin just as much TLC as going out. And you can just make the most of all the products you already have at home (unless you fancy a little treat!) the biggest thing is about relaxing and taking a step back to think about you.
