I’m a preacher of the saying ‘you get what you pay for’ in all senses of the phrase. When it comes to beauty and skincare over the years I’ve been lucky enough to be able to afford higher-end products. And generally, I’ve found them worth the extra spend as they perform better or last longer. But this isn’t to say that all cheaper/ high street beauty brands are rubbish. Here are six of my favourite make up items under £11 that you need to own (or at least try).
Now I wanted to keep this post as a makeup items under £10 originally, but I couldn’t miss off the Maybelline Dream Urban Cover Foundation which retails at £10.99. I bought this as a ‘dupe’ for the IT Cosmetics CC Cream and usually with dupes I find I much prefer the higher end item. But with this foundation, I love it as much as what it’s trying to emulate.
I sang the foundations praises back in my April favourites (how was it so long ago?!) and I’m still very much in love. The Urban Cover foundation has a great consistency which makes it very easy to blend on the skin. It’s also easy to build up which is good as initially it comes out more like a CC Cream. This is generally an all-round great foundation. It lasts well, it doesn’t dry up my face and there’s a good choice of colour matches.
I used to always use the Urban Decay Potion Primer, but after using the E.L.F Shadow Lock Eye Primer I genuinely can’t bring myself to spend over 5 times on the Urban Decay version. My first variations of this eye primer have come from trips to the States but I’m so happy that the brand is now stocked in Superdrug. They’re a great affordable makeup brand, and really good if you want to try out colours and trends before investing.
This eye primer is easy to apply, isn’t too tacky on and really helps with the vibrancy of shadows. I do feel that it helps my shadows stay on for longer and not crease which is all I need from it.
I remember using Collection loads when I was a teenager, then I started getting into makeup more and moved away. Assumptions were made that because it was cheap it wasn’t the best. And while that might be true for some products the Collection Lasting Perfection Concealer is blooming brilliant. This concealer has been quite long-standing in my makeup bag as I raved about it in my July 2018 favourites.
The concealer has a creamy consistency so it doesn’t sink into the creases under my eyes. It also doesn’t feel drying under my eyes which I appreciate as I have dry enough skin as it is. It’s staying power is pretty great and matches concealers I have which are 4 or 5 times the price.
I used to be obsessed with liquid lipsticks and blew a small fortune on them a few years back. Now I don’t tend to use them as much as they’re either drying, or they sit in the creases on my lips. But one I still love is the Sleek Matte Me Ultra Smooth Matte Lip Creams, especially when they’re under a fiver.
As the name suggests they’re a lip cream as opposed to a liquid lipstick even though they apply in the same way. They have similar lasting powers to liquid lipsticks and need very minimal topping up during the day even after eating. They’re also very light and comfortable to wear which as I’m getting older I really appreciate. There are loads of great shades to choose from and at the price point, you can afford to try out the brighter/ darker colours you’re not quite sure about.
I need anything I can get to make my eyes look more awake. And that’s where the Rimmel Scandal’Eyes Waterproof eyeliner pencil in Nude comes in. I tend to line my lower lash line with this pencil and it brightens up my whole eye making me look more awake. A much easier way than having to sleep more hours each night!
The eyeliner glides on and is quite creamy compared to some other eyeliner pencils I’ve used at this kind of price point. And the nude colour stands out without looking too pale or white. I’ve tried out the black as well as a liner on my top lash line and it’s been of similar quality.
The final item I want to talk to you about is my all-time favourite nude lipstick. The bullet I have above is pretty old as Soap & Glory have changed their packaging since then. But they still do the same beautiful lipsticks which I am very pleased about as I’ll need to replace this one soon.
The Soap & Glory Sexy Mother Pucker Lipstick is the best shade for my lips. I’m quite pale so sometimes nudes can emphasis that or look too dark, but this is a happy medium. You can tell I have something on as the lipstick smooths out the lines on my lips without sinking into it. And I get a very slight amount of colour, but nothing which stands out. So when I’m looking for a little something, or I’m going to work and just want to swipe something on quickly this is always what I reach for. The lipstick itself is quite creamy and it feels pretty hydrating on my otherwise dry lips.

I love the elf products- they’re all cruelty free too which is a huge added bonus.

Oh, wow! You are right I really do need these in my life now, especially at those prices. I love the sound of the Soap & Glory lippie in particular!
Really great prices Rhian. I’m a sucker for eyeliner and being waterproof is crucial for me.
I’m really pale too so it sounds like that lipstick would be perfect for me. I’m glad it doesn’t cost the earth and doesn’t sink into the lines of the lips.
Oh I’ll have to look at some of these products for stocking fillers. they look amazing
These are all quite cheap which is always a good point for me!
I love IT Cosmetics CC Cream so will certainly give this foundation a try as it is much cheaper
Like the sound of that concealer, it’s probably my most used item as I have MASSIVE under eye bags..! Always looking for one that will give good natural coverage
I’ve never tried an eyeshdaow lock primer before, but will have to see if these aids in making my eyeshadow last longer throughout the day
I love the Collection concealer – swear by it – and have used the Soap & Glory product in the past. Will definitely be checking out the others!
You’re right that collection concealer is absolutely fantastic!! I’ve used it for years xxx
I love the collection concealer and the E.L.F shadow lock eye primer. On the look out for a good nude lipstick so will give this one a try.
These are great makeup finds, They look nice and great value for money and the products are super.
I tend to find that all the Rimmel London products are affordable and great quality but haven’t considered the others, really. Good to see some Soap & Glory for under a tenner!
I need to explore more of what Rimmel have on offer x
