The aesthetics of our homes can affect our moods and outlook on a day to day basis. When we live in an overly cluttered space, we are more likely to feel stressed, lethargic or uncomfortable. The end of the year can be an excellent time to declutter your home. Naturally, you’ll have accumulated extra possessions throughout the year(s), and you may not wish to keep everything. To tackle a big declutter, why not try a few of these tips.

Categorise your items

When you’re decluttering your home, it’s best to do this on a room by room basis. In each room, go through your items and categorise them using boxes. One category should be for items that you definitely wish to keep and a second box for items that you want to dispose of. Create a third box for items that you want to keep but do not use often. This third box of items can be put into a storage space such as the garage or the loft.

Ask the right questions

When you are categorising your items, be sure to ask the right questions. Do not be tempted to pile everything into your garage or loft space! Only keep things that you will use later down the line. Ask yourself- when did I last use this item? Or, am I likely to need this in the future? Consider if you would still buy this item now. If the answer is no, you might want to consider whether you need to keep it. Often, we tend to hang onto objects out of pure habit-even though we are unlikely to use them. When you are decluttering, be brutal and try to break the cycle.

Recycle or sell

When you are getting rid of your items, recycle as many of them as possible. If you prefer, give the items to charity stores or sell them on. Sites like Facebook Marketplace, Ebay or Bonanza are easy to use and can allow you to make a little cash on your unwanted goods. Pre-Christmas is a great time to make a little space and gain some extra money too.

Tackle small areas at a time

When you are going through your home, tackle small areas at a time. Declutter your wardrobe, fully, and then move onto any items stored under the bed etc. Trying to attempt too many jobs at the same time can become a little stressful. Decluttering even one room can take a bit of time when you have lots of possessions..

Professional house clearance

To make the process a whole lot easier, it can be a great move to invest in a professional house clearance service. Such services can quickly and easily clear your home of unwanted goods plus correctly dispose of them. When it comes to larger items of furniture, for instance, it can be a hassle to get rid of these. Most house clearance companies will recycle the items so you can also be confident that you’re going green.

When you’re next shopping, consider carefully which home purchases you need. Questioning our shopping habits can help us to accumulate less clutter ongoing.
