What price beauty? This is the question that we have to ask ourselves when we review our personal budget and realise just how much goes on how we look. From those must-have new beauty products to expensive salon treatments, the cost of looking the way we want can be significant. But if you want to save money without compromising on how you look, can it be done? Well, it turns out there are some ways to save on your beauty bill and still get the products and treatments that you want. You don’t have to be a slave to the salon when the products you can get at home are now so effective – from brilliant skincare to professional products to sort your hair or your smile – it’s all out there….
The good news is, you don’t have to start cutting your own hair to save money with trips to the hair salon. Maintaining great locks can be pricey, especially if you have colour treatments, but there are ways to make it easier. If you need a few more weeks between salon visits, spray-on root cover products can give you a little bit of breathing space. Or if you have highlights, either opt for just a T-section to top up, or switch to balayage, which deliberately doesn’t go near the roots so it’s not as harsh when it grows out. Investing a little money in a deep conditioning hair mask can help to keep your locks fresh when they need a trim – or you can even DIY it using ingredients like mashed avocado, olive oil and apple cider vinegar. Also, your local college is likely to offer hairdressing appointments for a very low price as students need to practice – if you only want a little trim this could work well.
Your beautiful smile makes a huge difference to how you look and feel, and there are ways to save on beautifying it. It’s possible now to get clear braces without pricey visits to the dentist’s office to give your smile a makeover. Or teeth whitening strips are a simple home alternative to expensive laser whitening treatments, and can be just as effective if you don’t have many shades to lift. You could also try switching to a whitening toothpaste and mouthwash – there are lots of brands like Blanx now available that promise to have a powerful clinical-grade effect at home.
Over the last few years, there has been a revolution in skincare. It’s now possible to get premium products for much smaller prices than the designer skincare brands. Shops like The Ordinary or The Inkey List have completely changed the game, offering cost effective single ingredient products that you can layer together. There are lots of sample regimes online to get you started. If you don’t fancy playing chemist, you could consider joining Beauty Pie, who offer amazing skincare and makeup formulated in the same labs as expensive brands for a low price, if you sign up for a membership.
