*This is a collaborative post on the first things to do when we move into our new home
With everything going on it’s nice to get some positive news. And that news is we should be getting the keys to our new home very soon. I’ve been counting down the days until we can move into our new home since we had the offer accepted at the start of December. We had planned to take 3 months to do the renovation work we wanted to do. And then once that was done we’d move in. Now I’m under no illusion that this may take longer, especially for the things we need contractors for. But it doesn’t stop it being super exciting!
Our trip to Portugal was due to be in just over a week’s time. And as we’re not going I’ll be spending time in our new home doing as much as I can. I’ll probably be stripping wallpaper and throwing as much stuff away as I can. Here’s a breakdown of the first things I need to do when we move into our new home.
So I’ve had a really rubbish time when it comes to electoral role. I declared I was back living at my parents last February when I moved back. The council added me to the electoral role but it didn’t get to credit suppliers. So last year my credit score went down quite a bit, and I had a few bits of credit declined. This was really infuriating and even though I had evidence from the council I was on the register Equifax refused to do anything about it. Despite months of calls to them. So I want to make sure this doesn’t happen when we move.
The very first thing I’ll do when we move into our new home, or just when we get the keys, will be to add ourselves. We’ll then also be able to set up our direct debit for council tax. Although sadly we’ll have missed out on the two free months.
We’re planning on doing a complete purge when we move into the house. So carpets, curtains, nets, wallpaper, the kitchen, the ensuite and so much more is going to go. We want to strip the house as much as possible in the first week. This means we’re good to go with the next steps. I’m actually pretty excited about smashing up a kitchen. Although I don’t know if Luke will trust me with this!
One thing I want to consider is the indoor stairs lifts which is installed in the property. The people we’re buying off had this installed when they were caring for an elderly parent. We have no need for the stairlift but want to make sure it’s collected by the right people so it can be refurbished/ reused where possible. There are lots of people out there who would find something like this super handy so anything we can do to aid this we will.
Thankfully our new home is already set up with the electricity company we want to go with. So on the day we move in I want to call the electricity (and gas/ water) suppliers so we’re only paying for what we use. I’m keen to get direct debits set up as early as possible as it will be much easier to manage than big bills coming in a few months down the line.
Other things like the TV license we want to set up when we move into our new home, but it’s less urgent as a first port of call.
Even though we may not be living there for the first few months I want to set up the internet. This means if there’s a day I need to wait for deliveries and I can work from home I’ll be able to. Plus if Luke ends up staying there over a weekend as he’s doing work he can connect to the WiFi and not drain his mobile data.
Setting it up early means when we are ready to move into our new home it will be ready and waiting for us. And there will be no awkward few weeks/ months of waiting to get it sorted. Especially with the way things are at the moment I know these things may take longer.
Again another thing we don’t need to do until we physically move into our new home. But it’s important for us to register to a local doctor and dentist like the one from massapequa family dentistry clinic. I’m really hoping by our actual move-in date the craziness of what’s going on will have died down, but we’ll see.
It’s so important to have the facilities you need local, and if one of us was ill we’d struggle to get all the way home to where we are registered.
Then one of the final things we can do when we officially move into our new home will be to change our address everywhere. I’ve started to make a list of things I’ll need to change which will also come in handy when we get married and I need to change my name everywhere!
We don’t want to change many posts until we actually move in permanently in case we miss anything important. And then finally once we’re officially in we can change our address on our car and van insurance.

Some really handy tips and some easily forgotten with all the things you have going on when moving house. You always forget something to change the address on though don’t you.
These are some really useful tips. I’ve had trouble getting on the electoral role too – I moved in Jan and signed up last month but it hasn’t updated on my credit score yet. I also still need to register at a doctors and dentists – I finally decided to get around to it last week, then all this happened! So I’m going to wait until it dies down too x
Yeah the electoral roll is such a toughie so I want to do is as soon as possible! x
That is a comprehensive list, I always forgot something so having a checklist is a great idea
We fortunately moved three weeks before we got married so I was able to do most things in one big swoop as it took forever, but now I’m sat here a year later I’ve suddenly remembered on thing I didn’t change
Thankfully we’ll have around 2-3 years between ours which isn’t too bad but you’re right it’s a long task x
I’ve got all of these on my list, especially the electoral roll and internet – I am definitely going to need internet with me working from home and Jack having to homeschool for the foreseeable future.
Yeah it’s so important to keep connected as well while we can’t go out. I’m hoping places still have people to install them working x
Ensuring that we had an internet connection was one of the first things we sorted, working from home with a reliable connection was a must have
Great tips! Getting the Internet would be most important in our house, all 5 of us are constantly using it. Don’t forget to get all your post redirected to your new address.
We’re going to do some bits straight away and the rest when we officially move in x
I love throwing out anything I donāt need or donating / selling on Facebook so you can start fresh :))
I’m so glad you have this to look forward to. It’s so exciting when you get the news about the keys.
The electoral role is something I always forget to do til last minute ! Great little list . We are hoping to move by the end of the year . Fingers and toes crossed
I’ve had too many issues in the past with this to forget it haha x
Ah I remember doing all these things when we moved and whilst it is a faff it feels so much better once it is all done, this is a great list which will help lots of people who are moving so thanks for sharing! Great that you will be able to repurpose the lift to help someone else out too!
I’m a huge fan of ticking things off lists so I’m going to enjoy doing all the little tasks even if they are tedious x
Fantastic tips. I am not very organised so this is super helpful. I do love a good list too.
Been on the electoral role is so important. Such great tips lovely and so helpful xx
