Three Reasons Why You Need A Storage Unit If You’re Moving Or Renovating

*This is a collaborative post but all thoughts on why you need a storage unit are my own

When I first moved out of my shared ownership flat last February we got a storage unit to store furniture and things in as we were moving back into my parents. Between us we’d accumulated a lot of things which just wouldn’t fit back home. And since then I’ve been buying (and buying) more home items. Originally we’d only planned to have it for a year until we had keys to our house. But it turned out we needed the space while renovating so we still have it. But hopefully, we’ll be able to take everything out by June *fingers crossed*

If you are moving house or you’re renovating here’s why you need a storage unit.

Your belongings will stay safe and protected

Regardless of whether you’re doing a straight move or you’re planning to decorate or renovate, a storage unit keeps your belongings safe and protected. Moving day can be stressful when you’ve got to load up your whole place into a van and move it to another property. You could choose to get a short term storage unit offering and move your items gradually over a few weeks.

Then when you get the keys to your new place you don’t have to worry about the timing of a removal firm. Plus you can go round your new place at your leisure before moving your items in.

You need a storage unit as renovating is easier when the house is empty

If like us you’re renovating a property it’s so much easier to do when the place is empty. If your furniture and boxes are in your house while you’re working chances are they’ll either get damaged or covered in so much dust. There’s no way we could have done what we’ve done so far with anything in the house. We’ve been ripping up floorboards, knocking down walls and the place is a tip.

Even if you’re just decorating, it’s much easier to strip wallpaper, plaster walls and ceilings and paint without having to navigate around furniture. Or if you’re getting new flooring fitted your fitters will love you if the property is empty and they don’t have to keep moving sofas and beds.

Storage for items you may not have space for

Perhaps you’re temporarily downsizing, or like us moving in with family. Your new place might not have space for your HUGE pop vinyl collection or your vintage furniture. You need a storage unit just to keep your items safe ready for when you do have space. Now, this isn’t really economical if you’re not planning to get a bigger place for quite a while. But if like us it’s temporary it means you can keep everything you own ready for your next place.

We took our desk, drawers, and loads of Ikea kallax units with us to my parents but it didn’t even scratch the surface of what we owned. We’ve got a huge corner sofa, a wardrobe, bed frame, mattress and other smaller furniture items in our storage unit. Alongside boxes and boxes of stuff. Cushions we had nowhere to put. Kitchen items we didn’t need as my parents had them. And so much more.

Do you need a storage unit? Or have you ever used one?

I’ve never used one but my brother in law had one until recently after moving out of our in laws. It does sound like a great option if you don’t currently have the storage space or need space for renovation.

I think if you get the right company that’s looks professional etc, they can be a great way to store things for a while, we used one years ago before we moved from to house.

Oh yeah it’s well worth doing the research to find a good company. We spent ages ringing around before getting ours x

We used to live in a small flat and utilised a storage unit for excess items when we were looking to sell – ensuring that the flat looked as spacious as possible.

In hindsight I wish we had got a storage unit when we renovated our living room as we had to remove all the furniture into the kitchen and hallway whilst our carpet and wall paper was being put up.

I put my stuff in a storage unit as a student when I went back to my home country over summer. I pooled together with a few friends so the cost was much cheaper than renting a room. Plus my stuff was a lot safer there

That’s such a good idea to have done that, especially when a few of you paid in together x

Storage is so important – and you’re right, it can be indispensible when you’re showing a home/moving somewhere!

This would be a really good suggestion I can give to my daughter. They live in a condo unit and it is getting a little cramped because of the stuff they got for their son. The high chair, walker, toy car and crib are already taking up space. If they are not planning to have another child yet, they should either rent out a storage space to keep some of their stuff in or set up a garage sale.

    • Rhian Westbury says:

Yep it depends on how much they want to keep the products, it can be worth paying for storage in the long run if it’s cheaper than rebuying it all if they need it again x

I used a storage unit in the past where I had to move to my parents house and still had a lot of possessions to store. It was a god send at the time. I think they are extremely useful

My son is moving out of his university digs next month and has a week gap between his moving in date for his new one so we will need to put his stuff in storage

I’d love to have a storage unit just now! With working from the spare room the house feels more cramped than ever <3

They are great – we moved from a house to a flat when we first relocated (back in a house now) but our storage unit was SO useful for storing our big things. Mainly garden stuff..!

When you’re moving around quite a bit it’s so handy, and means you don’t need to get rid of things x
