How We’re Shaping Up Our Garden Before Renovating

back garden of our new house

*This is a collaborative post but all thoughts and words on shaping up our garden are my own

Moving into our new house, shaping up our garden isn’t top of our renovation list. While we both enjoy a little sunshine and a BBQ neither of us is outdoorsy people. So when we were planning our renovations the garden wasn’t our top priority. After we move in the only thing left to do indoors are the main bathroom. Then once that is fitted (hopefully before Christmas) we’ll think about our garden.

In the long run we’ve got quite a lot to do in the garden. So we may even need to do it in parts as we want to replace all the decking, get rid of the dilapidated sheds and get a new one and replace all the fences around the bulk of the garden. But we also have a second driveway around the side of our house so need to repave and replace the gates as they’re falling apart. And the previous owners had a massive pond with coy carp in so we need to fill that in/ do something with the hole. So there’s a lot for us to contend with.

In the short term/ until we can save enough money we’re going to be shaping up our garden to make it useable in the meantime. Here’s what we’re planning on doing.

Getting some comfortable garden furniture

So we can enjoy the space and sit in there we want to get some nice comfortable garden furniture. We’re very lucky to have a large decking space so we can get something quite spacious. I’m keen on rattan garden furniture including a sofa as well as chairs and a large table.

We want to be able to entertain in the garden and have BBQ’s so furniture is quite important. Plus we want to buy quality so that they last into the future when our garden is fully done.

Adding lighting and hanging baskets around the house

There’s a lot of things currently hanging or attached to the side of the house like lights and dead hanging baskets. But everything is pretty old so we want to replace it. Once we’ve removed everything from the side of the house we can give it a good clean including the gutters. The actual brickwork itself is in good condition so we don’t need to paint anything which is good.

Then I’d like to put some nice solar powered bright lights in place which we can use when we’re out there. And some bright colourful hanging baskets to add some life to the garden. Over time when we’re shaping up our garden we’ll get proper flowerbeds, but that will be further down the line.

Shaping up our garden by clearing the dead greenery

The thing I am least excited about is getting rid of all the dead greenery and bits in the garden. I’m not greenfingered in the slightest, but I know tidying it up will make a huge difference. There’s quite a few trees and bushes, and some flower beds which have weeds and some dead bits. But then there are some beautiful blooming bushes which I want to keep.

Until we properly spruce it up, shaping up our garden in the shorterm will involve a lot of clearing up and pruning. At least then when we do look out we know what space we have to grow things in. And it will look nice.

Giving the lawn some TLC

The overall area of the lawn won’t really be changing other than a bit we’ll lose when we re-pave the back. But there are weeds in the lawn and it’s pretty overgrown and messy. When we move in I want to start shaping up our garden by mowing and trimming it and then giving it some TLC. It’s not that green so I want to get miracle grow and give it a bit of love.

The previous owners had a dog and various other animals so I don’t think it was cared for as much as it could have been. We will be getting cats once we’ve settled in so we want to make a nice outdoor area for them.

Have you spruced up your garden?

That’s quite a bit of lawn you have there. We used to have lawn edging on ours which is a nice feature but is difficult to cope with when you have the grasscutter out. Plenty of room for some nice bee and butterfly friendly plants too. I’m sure it’s going to look lovely when you’re done.

I find the garden is a long process, a room in the house can be done fairly quick but with the outside there’s lots of variables, and can look great, personally you have to get the feel of the type of garden you want, and this changes over they years, it did for us, and we are still tweaking it now lol

I 100% agree, everyone I know who’s done a garden it’s taken forever! That’s why we think we’ll be doing it most of Spring, Summer and probably Autumn next year x

Garden furniture is a very good idea, especially when the weather is nice as it has been this summer, you can really enjoy the sunshine and good weather in the garden. We have been getting our house renovated and its such a long process!

You really have hit the ground running! Don’t worry about the garden though, I like your tip of getting some garden furniture – have a little place to go and have a breather from all the work inside! Sim x

I find gardening such a bore but it sounds like you’re absolutely smashing it! Your garden is going to be the ultimate piece of natural heaven for you all 🙂

We’ve been sprucing our garden up since lockdown. We’ve got some new garden furniture, jet washed the patio and cut down some old bushes!

I think the right garden furniture and some lighting can make such a big difference. Our garden is so basic but it’s full of kids outdoor toys so it will do for now!

Love the sound of your plans, renting we are limited to what we can do, but this year we have bought new garden furniture and lots of plant pots and lighting.

We have been focusing on our garden at the moment, with a new play area for the children. I think you need to do the garden in stages to see how things flow for you before starting the next section

You’ve got a great amount of garden space, it’ll be a wonderful space for enjoying the outdoors when everything is finished! Rattan furniture sounds great. I imagine it’ll be quite daunting at first, but the garden will be lovely and so worth the effort.

it is a lovely space, but you’re right it will be quite daunting to tackle at first, especially as we’re not outdoorsy/ garden people x
