*AD- This is a collaborative post but all words on windows are my own
Windows, what a sexy blog topic. But being a 30-year-old homeowner, topics like windows are pretty exciting to me. My life is that exciting. Especially at the moment, any home-related topics seem to make me giddy. And windows are the latest thing to add to that list.
Unless this is the first time you’ve landed on my blog, in which case hello. You’ll know we’re renovating what we hope will be our forever home (or near enough). I say we, but it’s mainly been Luke and his dad that have done 95% of the work. There’s been a hell of a lot going on from knocking down walls to stripping absolutely everything from the house.
When it comes to the windows in the house they seem to be in a pretty good nick. So we’re not replacing anything which already exists. Although it’s something we’d love to update in the coming years. Or even if we don’t replace them we can get them refurbished by a company like Six Over Six Windows who can reglaze what’s already there.
The two windows we’re doing are both brand new additions. While I’d have loved fixed roof lights for the kitchen there’s just not enough room for this. But here are the two windows we are looking to install.
As the first owners of our house put in an extension, instead of blocking up the old french style doors from the living room, they were left in. So you could walk through them to get to the small office at the back before the garden. To us, it seemed pointless keeping them in. You’d lose precious wall space to put things there. And we’d never use them as doors.
So we ripped them out and built an insulated wall between the two rooms. But to keep everywhere light and allow the sun to go through both the living room and office we left space to install a window at the top. The window will be quite high on the wall so it won’t impact furniture. But it’s going to allow us to maintain a light airy space.
To give us as much space for the actual glass we’re opting for aluminum surrounds as opposed to plastic. With plastic ones, they’re much chunkier and to install it within a wall it would need more space. So we’d have to have a smaller piece of glass. Aluminum is a bit more expensive but it’s much smaller and sleeker.
As we’re doing a full garage renovation and building rooms in there we need a window added in. The utility room will have a door leading to the garage so plenty of light, but Luke’s man cave needs a window. The window is not just to let light into the room. It’s a security necessity as a means of escape in the event of a fire and for ventilation of the room.
We’re opting for quite a large window in this space so it doesn’t end up resembling a dungeon. Although I’m sure Luke wouldn’t mind that. For this one, the main thing we cared about was matching the dark wooden surround as closely as we could to the windows already in the main house. You’ll only see the window from the garden so no one else will be able to see it, but we’ll know.
Then over time we’re going to replace some of the rest of our external windows and we may opt for timber sash windows for some of them as they look really smart.

Isnt it funny what excites you when you own your own home. Great idea in regards to the window and blocking up the previous. Wall space is optimum here as well especially for tvs, tables pictures etc
I think the first home that you really make your own as a couple is do exciting. I loved doing ours quite some years back. Mich X
Yeah it’s great as in my previous flat there was very little I could do as it was shared ownership x
Renovating is so exciting isn’t it? Window styles do make or break a property look though don’t they?
I’m obsessed with windows too. I would love to replace our double glazing but we got it priced up and was out of the question.
Yeah windows can be pretty expensive, we haven’t got ours priced up so have no idea how much it could cost but I dread to think x
Renovating is so beautiful. I love large windows, because I want to enjoy the sea view from my home!
How exciting! I got my own house at 19 so I have been a saddo for a while hahaha I absolutely LOVE shopping for home things and hope to renovate a house myself one day too. You’re doing a great job by the sounds of it
That’s amazing and quite an interesting post. Renovating your house is always an exciting feeling.
We had the windows redone in our old rental property – obviously we didn’t own it but we were there for 2 years before and 6 years after and there was such an amazing difference from having them done!
It really does make a difference, and that’s great that you were able to get that done in your rental x
We are looking at windows at the moment and can’t decide whether to wait until next year due to the cost. There is so much to consider when renovating
Windows are such an important feature in a home. A few years ago we had an extension built and opted for an arched window on the upstairs landing. It cost more (and the builders grumbled about it being non-standard) but it looks lovely and lets in lots of daylight. We never regretted it for an instant.
Sometimes you’ve gotta think ahead and think what you’ll look at every day and love even if it’s not the cheapest or easiest thing. These things last a long time x
I love having big windows in our house, I hate rooms looking dark and dinjy
