Planning Our Garage Renovation

Garage current state

*This is a collaborative post but all thoughts on the garage renovation are my own

We’re making good process on the house now which is so exciting. But the one thing we know we won’t finish before we move in (as it’s not a necessity) is the garage renovation. We are incredibly lucky to have a double garage which joins onto our house. There are two shutters are the front so you can open it from the driveway. And when we first moved in there was just one door at the back going into the garden. To begin with we’ve made a doorway from our kitchen diner into the garage. And this alone has made things so much easier.

The garage itself is being used as a workspace/ storage at the moment. We’re trying to keep very little in the actual house until rooms are finished. But we have big plans for the space. We were originally going to do all of this before moving in. But as we’ve been pushed back on timings already most of this will probably be done after we actually move in.

Our garage renovation plans

We’re going to be splitting our double garage into three rooms. When you walk directly into the garage from the house we’ll have a utility room. This is going to be about a quarter of the whole space and will house our washing machine and tumble drier. Alongside laundry space and cupboards for cleaning products, the hoover etc. It will be nice to have this space outside of the kitchen. Plus if the washing is on while I’m working I can shut the door on it to mute noise.

When you walk straight on the whole far side of the garage- so about half the space- will be Luke’s man cave. This will be his chill/ gaming/ office/ storage space which I know he is craving. We all need our own space so this is somewhere we can have totally to himself. In the same way, that my office is my space. Plus it means I don’t have to look at all of his board games/ airsoft equipment etc.

The actual garage part

Then the front half of one side will still be a normal garage. You’ll be able to access it still from outside, but in the case, the electrics go there will also be a pocket door leading from the end of Luke’s room into it. This will have racking for Luke’s work stuff/ tools etc. And be a good storage spot. Plus as we’re lucky enough to have massive attic space in the garage we’re going to install a loft hatch and ladder which will be accessible from this room.

If we didn’t split out the garage we’d never put our cars in there so it would just be used for storage/ junk. So by doing the garage renovation we’re giving ourselves additional rooms. And making the most of the space we’re lucky enough to have.

Some of the things we need to do for the garage renovation

I’m not going to go into too much detail as I won’t be doing a lot of the work. But one of the first things to do will be levelling out the floor slightly as it’s quite a step from the house to the garage. We’re planning on using a concrete supplier so we can build up the floor a bit. And then we’ll go over it with garage floor paint to give it that glossy high quality finish. It has good resistance to heavy foot traffic which will be great for the utility space. Two coats of epoxy garage floor paint can give the equivalent of ten coats of conventional coatings so it won’t take as long to put down.

Then the dividing walls will go up with plasterboard, insulation and soundproof material. Then the walls for Luke’s man cave need to be built out so the whole space can be insulated and soundproofed again. This will block up the actual garage door. And ensure that the side which is connected to our neighbour is fully soundproofed.

Once that’s done the ceiling needs boarding up and the loft hatch put in. Once this is done the rooms will feel more like actual rooms. Then we can carry on with decorating and fitting them out like any other room.

Hopefully, the garage renovation won’t take us too long to do once we’re moved in. But I’ll be keeping you updated on the progress as and when we start.

Security for the garage renovation

One of the biggest things we discussed was the security of the renovation. Now you can access the house through the garage so we installed a security camera right outside the garage for our peace of mind. But we’re also going to set up motion sensors in the garage too which we can set whenever we go out.

We do need to get a new door to go from the garden into the garage and a good lock is going to be very important to this. If you’re looking to do something similar then look for a local locksmith in your area such as Locksmith Doncaster, Locksmith Barnsley or Locksmith Rotherham.

Wow it sounds like it is going to be amazing once done, we have been talking about a garage renovation as well. But building on top and having it as a contained place for C so she can have her own space but have us on hand

Thats such a big job Rhian. I bet it will look amazing when finished. It would stress me out doing it though, you must have nerves of steel lol

It does stress me out a little bit but because I’m not living there, but when we do move in and still have the garage to do it probably will. I’ll just have to shut the door and forget about it x

Personally we dont use Garages for cars, if we had a huge space then yes, but in the UK we don’t have as big spaces as somewhere like America, we’ve utilised it with storage and extra space etc.

That sure looks like a major project, but I know if you set your heart to it and plan carefully, it will be in no time. I will keep checking for your post when the project has been completed.

That sounds like you’re going to have some amazing spaces when the renovations are complete. I cannot wait to see the photos of the completed work.

Good luck with this! We actually removed the garage in our case to make better use of space, and now we have an outhouse which acts like a garage.

Fingers crossed the garage renovation doesn’t take too long! I can’t wait to see what you do with it.

It definitely won’t be done before we move in, but we may have the basic starting point x

Oh this is so exciting! We are in the early stages of planning an extension for our house and it would be so nice to create extra rooms as well as building a garage.

Such a big job but it sounds like it will be amazing when done and worth the hard work and hassle. Would love to renovate our garage but we rent.

Wow what a big project!. I can’t wait to see what it looks like when it’s done up. I’d love somewhere like that to be my chill out room ha!

I am very jealous of the utility room you’re putting in – I would love a bigger utility room but the house we’re buying only really has room for the washing machine in it (and it probably needs demolishing as it’s very damp in there). Good luck with the renovation – can’t wait to see the finished thing!
