We’re around 5 weeks away from the big day now so Christmas preparations are in full swing. I’ve already pulled my decorations down from the loft so we can see what we have. As it’s the first year in our new house I know we’ll need a lot more decorations than normal as we’ll have two trees! Yes two, and I’m so excited. I hope you’re all enjoying the planning for festivities even though 2020 is likely to be very different from normal. This week I bring you my gift guide for her with some great present ideas for your mum, sister, gran, or best friend.
Mermaid Salt Vodka* (£37.75) comes from the Isle of Wight Distillery and I’ll admit before I was sent the bottle it’s not something I’d heard of before. The distillery covers most bases producing Mermaid Gin and Pink Gin, HMS Victory Navy Strength Gin, and Rum, alongside the Mermaid Salt Vodka.
The aptly named Mermaid Salt Valt is shot with a little pinch of locally sourced sea salt added for smoothness. And each batch is hand-crafted in a column still before being blended with Isle of Wight spring water in small batches. If you’ve ever tasted chocolate with sea salt you’ll know what I mean by that subtle fresh feeling you get from the salt. This vodka is really smooth and doesn’t have that strong acidic taste you get from some vodkas. Because of this, it makes it ideal to drink with a chaser or as part of a cocktail.
If vodka isn’t the right tipple for the person you’re buying for then why not choose some gin? And this is another slightly more unusual one as it’s a Dutch- Indonesian hybrid that celebrates the 150-year-old shared history of the two countries. Over 25% of Dutch people have family links in Indonesia including the brand’s founders. The drink itself is named after their grandfather who emigrated to Holland in the ’50s, but missed the taste of Indonesia to start infusing Dutch gin with spices from his homeland. This original recipe was used as inspiration for the gin we have today.
The drink itself is described as ‘Dutch courage mixed with Indonesian spirit’. Do you know where the phrase Dutch courage came from? There are two ways the story is told; jenever (or Dutch gin) was used by English soldiers back in the 1600s to give them courage before going into battle (and to warm the body in the cold weather). And the other version is that English soldiers saw Dutch soldiers doing this and decided to follow suit.
But back to the gin itself. It blends the base of juniper with whole clove, cubeb pepper, cinnamon, lemongrass, rosehips, fennel and coriander. This creates a gin which is spicy and fragrant and catches you on the first sip. But then bursts with citrus.
These are not your average bath bomb they’re CBD bath bombs* (£22). CBD is designed to relax you and have plenty of health benefits, and it’s starting to become more common to find it in beauty or wellbeing products. But this is the first time I’ve ever seen (or heard) of it as a bath bomb which is why I had to include it in my gift guide for her.
This set of two bath bombs are infused with 25mg of CBD each within a hidden bath melt inside the bath bomb. One is Ylang-Ylang and Patchouli, and the other is Lavender, so they’re both designed to be super relaxing for your body. When the middle melts in your bath water the CBD is absorbed through your skin. It’s said to detox, nourish, soften and exfoliate while strengthening the skin with vitamins and antioxidants.
I don’t know about you but edible presents are always a good shout for anyone, especially when they look amazing like these Chocolate Biscuits* (£11.99) from PrezzyBox. These biscuits are in fact all made from the finest Belgian chocolate and have been handmade to look like classic biscuits. These look amazing on the website, but in person, they’re even more equistic. The details and colours on the chocolates make them look like real biscuits. I’m sure most people would be fooled if you had them on a plate with your tea. Although I wouldn’t be dunking these ‘biscuits’.
Anyone who’s been around for a while will know how much I love gift experiences which is why I love Red Letter Days so much. 2020 has been a strange year and a lot of experiences and things have had to be put on hold. This is why having some things to look forward to in 2021 is going to be even more exciting (and important) for us. You can get so many different types of gift experiences on Red Letter Days whether you fancy a pampering package at a spa, a foodie experience at a restaurant or afternoon tea, nights and weekends away at hotels, or an experience a bit different like bungee jumping or a photography session.
There’s an experience for absolutely everyone and you don’t have to make the decision yourself. With plenty of gifting boxes, you can buy one as a present and let them choose the exact experience. For example, the Merry Christmas Gift Box is £49.99 and there are over 2,500 different experiences to choose between.
I challenge you to find an adult or a child who doesn’t love Toy Story. There’s something strangely nostalgic about the movie, but also endearing as an adult. If you know someone who loves the movie then these fine art pins* (From £25) from Pulse Gallery and Artland would make a great Christmas gift. These are no regular pins, but they’re limited edition with each one hand-numbered. Everything produced by Pulse Gallery including fine art pins and prints comes with a certificate of authenticity so it’s the type of gift that is 100% one-of-a-kind.
Above I have a large number of Toy Story pins including; Wheezy, Jessie, Bullseye, The Alien, Slinky, Forky, and Rex. Each one is beautifully finished and detailed a real collector’s item. The Pulse Gallery site is a treasure trove of limited edition, unique, and one-of-a-kind fine art pins and prints from The Simpsons, Disney, Star Wars, and more. Head over and explore if you’re looking for a truly special present.
There’s nothing more indulgent than a bath full of all the trimmings, a candle, and a good book. And if you’re searching for a gift for someone who loves baths the Bathing Heaven* (£69) set ticks all the boxes. The set comes with a large 400g jar of bath sugar, 2 x 15ml jars of bath jelly, 2 x 15g jars of hand and body butter, and 2 x sot wax votive candles. The bath sugar is finely ground so it melts into the bath so smoothly. The bath jelly melts in your hands to be massaged into the skin and it leaves the skin feeling so soft.
The hand and body butter is really light but so hydrating and nourishing, just what you want when you’re hand washing a lot. Plus it wouldn’t be a fully indulgent bathing set without some hand-poured calming candles. All of the products in this set are infused with a blend of essential oils including geranium, neroli, ylang-ylang, lavender, and patchouli. And all the items are natural and vegan friendly. No Secrets have some amazing Christmas gifts which you can check out here.
Now the first thing I’ll say is the photos do not do the beauty of these glasses justice. The glasses have a delicate lilac interior with silver plating over the exterior. The filigree design means the purple colour shines through and shimmers in the light. But as you can imagine they’re tough to photograph. But the filigree wine glasses by Artland* (£27.50) are truly a stunning present.
The filigree design is delicate and beautiful running the whole way around the glass. And each and every glass is mouth-blown and hand-crafted so they’re all unique. You can also get the same design in champagne saucers and gin glasses, and there’s also a light blue colour to chose from.
