A Totally Different Kind Of Christmas – December 2020 Overview

Mantlepiece Christmas decorations

December, December, December. We had such high hopes to make the best of Christmas 2020. But it was snatched from us at the last minute. Now I totally understand the need for all the restriction changes. But they were so last minute the world seemed to descend into some sort of chaos. So many people were queuing to buy food for Christmas dinner as they’d expected to be with family etc. But we made the most of what we could this December.

It wasn’t the first Christmas in our new house that we’d expected, but it is what it is.

Doorstep visits

I was due to meet a friend pre-Christmas for a catch-up and present exchange. But sadly we picked a day where it rained so much a walk was out of the question. But we did manage to snatch in some chats and views of each other from the doorstep. I think meeting friends for brunches and Christmas markets is one of the things I’ve missed most about December 2020.

When our Christmas plans changed super last minute due to being in Tier 4 I did doorstep visits with all the family, to drop off presents, deliver desserts and baked goods and just to see their faces. I managed to see my parents a few times, my Nan and even my brother. While it wasn’t quite the same, we made the most of it.

Fitness

So December saw my peloton arrive and be installed. After using a basic bike for a few months to check I would stick with it I bite the bullet and got the bike itself. And I’ve had a much better month of working out knowing that I’m pushing myself as much as I should. And I do enjoy working out now. Although I’ve still got a long way to go to push my own fitness.

Zoom virtual murder mystery

Pre Tier 4 festivities

The week before it was announced we were due to go into Tier 4 I managed to meet a friend for a wander around a local market. It was nice to see the decorations, have a hot chocolate and catch up in a semi-normal way. The day was lovely and we even managed to sit outside and have dinner before it all changed.

Me and Luke had planned a nice pre-Christmas dinner the Sunday before Christmas. But we were due to move into Tier 4 from the Saturday so we changed our reservations and headed to Miller and Carter on Friday night. I’m so glad we managed to fit in a meal as it was so nice to get out, have an excuse to dress up and feel a bit more ‘normal’.

We had booked to see Woman Wonder at a drive-in cinema just after Christmas. Despite being in Tier 4 we thought it would be okay as you’re literally in your car. And you don’t get out. But it was deemed too dangerous and got cancelled which I’m sad about as I really want to see the movie.

Real Christmas tree in the living room

Christmas in December 2020

Our decorations went up a bit earlier than normal as I wanted to enjoy having them in the house for as long as possible. Although now they’re down the house feels super empty and bare. A few of my friends have pre-Christmas birthdays’ so to celebrate we did a virtual murder mystery the weekend before Christmas. We also did some fun games through work to celebrate Christmas and do our Secret Santa.

I made the mistake of heading to M&S as it opened on Sunday 19th just after the Christmas announcement was made so the queue was crazy. But we got enough festive buffet food to feed an army and snacked all over the week before (and after) the big day.

Now Christmas day itself me and Luke had always planned to spend alone in our new house. So the main day didn’t really change for us. But we had hoped to see family on Christmas Eve and Boxing Day. But after a combination of present drop-offs, Facetime calls and a Christmas quiz we made the best of the festive period. I don’t think it’s how any of us would have liked it, but we did what we could.

How was your December 2020?

It was definitely a different Christmas and I hope that next year will be different! Jealous of your Pelaton bike though, I’d quite like one, but not sure I would use it enough to justify it.

That’s why I said to myself I wanted to test the app with a basic bike for a few months before buying it x

It certainly was a different Christmas, as we house share with my parents we obviously celebrated with them, but my mother in law was not here which she usually is. Despite this we had a lovely relaxed day

Glad you managed to squeeze in a meal out before the next lockdown. It is such a strange times but your doorstep deliveries to families must have lifted their spirits lots! x

It was certainly an odd Christmas but I have to say, I found it really special but also quite stress-free. I am normally so busy in the run up that I just feel crazy!

I’m sorry you didn’t make your film but fingers crossed you’ll make it soon.

Good luck with the new bike as well x

Yeah it was slightly less stressful, although it was all different for us as it was our first Christmas in our new home x

We were gutted by the last minute changes and definitely not how I thought I would be spending Christmas in my new home either but it happened.

I agree, our Christmas has been so different this year as well with lots of door step visits too and zoom calls with family and friends. Hopefully next year we can have a proper Christmas meet

Considering how different it was, it still seems like you had a fab time. Happy New Year lovely!

Our Christmas decs went up weeks earlier then they normally do. and it really helped me great into the Christmas spirit more. We was left a bit disappointed as we had arranged to go to my mum and dads, along with my sisters family on the 27th, but it got cancelled due to lockdown guidelines

Despite it being different, it seems you made it a good one. It is all we can do in the current situation isn’t it?

Ours was quiet, and enjoyable. 🙂

Christmas is my favorite holiday. For us, our family is very small so things weren’t all that different. For December, cases around here have been on the rise again.

Glad you are getting use out of your pelleton, it’s always one of those things you don’t know you’ll keep up with. We had a quiet Christmas, just the three of us, it was actually nice knowing we didn’t have to go anywhere
