The start of a new year is when I like to reflect on the previous year and then set new goals and targets for the one ahead. For 2020 our financial goal was for our house purchase to go through and for our main renovations to stay in budget. We were lucky to achieve both of those. But then I started thinking about my money goals for 2021.

Personally, my money goals for 2021 are to keep in budget with our bathroom and garage renovations. But also to save enough money to pay the deposit on a wedding venue, and be able to do some work in our garden. I’ve broken down my money goals for 2021, but I thought it would be nice to hear from some other money bloggers about their money goals for 2021.

Money goals for 2021 around saving and cutting back

2020 seemed to be a bit of a split-year when it came to money. Some people managed to save loads by not going out, but others didn’t manage to save if they lost income etc. So a lot of people have money goals for 2021 around saving money or cutting back expenses.

Steph from Www.fundingherfreedom.com has said, “I’m setting myself the challenge of saving £1000 each month, through a combination of cutting back on expenses, saving a chunk of my monthly wage, and side hustling the rest.”

And Claire from moneysavingcentral.co.uk said “I plan on trying to go on in 2021 as I have in 2020. I managed to save so much more money this year by cutting out holidays, eating out, and days out. Although I won’t stop it completely, I will certainly be cutting back.”

Claire from monethalia.com also wants to save more money in 2021. Her money goal is “I’m planning to save at least £1,500 every month next year. This money will go directly to my ISA or SIPP. I plan to achieve this by maintaining my current living expenses and increasing my income through side hustles, mostly blogging.”

Financial goals for 2021 around investing

There were a lot of answers around investing and maxing out investment plans. After 2020 you never know what’s going to happen so having money in lots of different places is very useful and it’s good to think ahead and plan your money goals for the longer-term future.

Pete from www.householdmoneysaving.com wants to “finally max out my Lifetime ISA contribution – I haven’t been doing so well with it over the last couple of years. My plan is to pump any extra money I make straight into it and increase my monthly direct debit. ”

Some peoples investments were around pensions, like Laura from www.savings4savvymums.co.uk who said “My plan is to finally set up my first self employed pension. I haven’t paid into one in seven years since I went self-employed and at the ripe old age of 35 think I better get one fast.”

For some people, it’s about managing those investments, Faith from www.muchmorewithless.co.uk. “My financial plan for 2021 is to turn our patchwork of different pension pots and investment pots into a retirement plan and work out when we can afford to retire. I’ve been talking to a financial adviser to help make it happen.”

Money goals for 2021 around paying off debt and other finances

Emma from www.beemoneysavvy.com has said “My biggest financial goal for 2021 is to get closer to paying off my mortgage. My fixed rate will end in 2021 and I plan on paying off a chunk of it before remortgaging and finding a better deal than the one I’m currently on. I see paying off my mortgage as a step towards financial independence.” I can only dream of paying off my mortgage, one day!

Emma from Www.makemoneywithoutajob.com has a similar mortgage-based goal. She said “I want to hit my mortgage provider’s max mortgage overpayment which is 10% of the overall capital. I plan to do this from side hustles like surveys, mystery shopping, eBay, and more.”

My financial goals are focused on paying off my debts. I ended up leaving my marriage with around 15k, but needs must. It is a lot lower now, but I still have work to do.

It’s so important to have money goals isn’t it? I am very financially aware (most of the time) and plan ahead. I’ve never invested though, maybe something for me to look at.

  9. Nick says:

Very interesting to read different people’s money goals. Personally I saved a lot in 2020 due to not being able to go out or go away for most of the year. So while I don’t plan to go mad in 2021, I am really looking forward to spending some of the money I have saved up on holidays, meals out, and so on!

    • Rhian Westbury says:

Yeah enjoying things when we’re able to that we perhaps took for granted before like meals out and holidays x
