How To Save Money When You’re Attending A Wedding

Bride and groom at a wedding

Attending a wedding is such an amazing experience. Whether it’s a family member, a lifelong friend or a work colleague. But weddings can be pretty expensive from the travel and hotel costs to outfits and presents.

We’re planning our wedding for May 2023 and we’re trying to save money on planning our wedding. But there are also lots of ways to save money when you’re attending a wedding as well. If you’ve got a wedding later this year, or even next year here are some tips.

Budget and start saving months before

Start putting aside a little bit of money into a sinking fund as early as possible. I had two weddings to attend last year and a wedding this summer so started putting aside a bit of money each month as soon as I knew the dates. This meant that I didn’t have a crazy spending patch when booking and paying for things.

Try and work out how much you’ll need for travel, hotel, presents, drinks on the night etc. Once you know how much you need split it across how many months you have left and start saving. The longer you have to save, the less you’ll need to put aside each month.

Don’t feel like you have to buy a new dress when attending a wedding

Weddings seem to come around like buses, and you might find one year you have quite a few weddings to attend. But buying a new outfit for every single wedding can end up costing a lot of money. Plus it can be quite wasteful if it’s something you won’t have the chance to wear very often. Don’t feel like you have to buy a new outfit for every single wedding.

For the two weddings I had last year they were with totally different crowds with only three people at both weddings so I wore the exact same outfit. I loved the dress and knew it was comfortable so it felt like a no brainer. You can look at changing up accessories, shoes and your makeup to make an outfit feel new and fresh.

Do your own hair and makeup

For certain weddings you may want to get your hair and makeup done professionally, but don’t feel like you have to every time. Plan to get ready with a group of friends so you can help each other with your hair. Doing your own hair can be tough, but a second pair of hands can make all the difference. Especially when it comes to curling your own hair.

Travel with a group to lower fuel or train costs when attending a wedding

If you’re attending a wedding alongside a group of friends look at travelling together to reduce the costs. If you need to drive try and do car shares between as many of you as possible. By travelling together you’ll be able to split the cost of fuel between as many of you as possible.

If you’re travelling by train, see if you can get any deals for travelling together. Some train lines offer group save tickets, so look into this before you book. And remember you’ll save money by booking your ticket in advance.

Hire an air B&B with a group of people

If you’re attending a wedding where you need to stay over look into all of your options. The hotel local for the wedding or connected to the venue might be more convenient but it might be a lot more expensive.

Look a hotels further out or Air B&B, especially if there’s a group of you that could stay together.

Attending weddings can be such an expensive affair! I agree about not feeling like you always have to wear something different…after all who is going to notice! Great tip on accommodation front.

I’ve been so bad with using a wedding as an excuse to buy a new outfit, but it shouldn’t feel like that x

It can be helpful to find ways of lowering costs. I always do my own hair and makeup. We are lucky the ones we have been to have been local so no need to book somewhere to stay.

I don’t think I’ve ever been to one local enough where a taxi was doable, too many people spread out x

It’s been so many years since I’ve been to a wedding that I honestly wouldn’t know what to do. Thanks for these tips!

Traveling with a group and sharing a B&B are both really good tips! The last wedding I went too, the accommodation (because there weren’t any options really!) was so expensive. I wish I asked if other people were sharing a place.

It is tough when there aren’t many options. We specifically picked somewhere with a hotel onsite that was only 70/80 pounds a night for two people so it wasn’t too expensive x

These are good suggestions for when one needs to save money. We are not frugal people and we really enjoy doings things up for weddings.

I think it’s more about being a guest at a wedding. We’re planning ours and aren’t doing it as frugally as we could x

So true. We went to a wedding and stayed as a group in an AirBNB and we saved a ton of money. We were able to split the cost 6 ways!
