*This is a collaborative post with Yours Clothing but all words on embracing colour in clothing are my own
I’ve never been the most adventurous person with clothing, and that probably stems from being always being on the larger side. As a teenager I predominately wore black clothing, partially because it fit the emo aesthetic, but also because it hid me and my size. The idea of embracing colour was never something that came to mind and even throughout my early to mid twenties black was the main colour in my wardrobe. I was (and still am) a creature of habit.
But while I still find safety in black and dark clothing I have started trying to embrace colour in clothing. Because lets face it colourful clothing are fun. When I was a teenager there wasn’t as much choice in plus size/ curve clothing. But thankfully in 2022 there’s a lot more choice, and you can get the fun colourful styles in larger sizes.
It can be hard to change your habits, especially when it’s so engrained in you. I shunned colour for so long that is was quite difficult to change that. So if you want to embrace colour in your wardrobe start off small. Denim is always a good place to start adding colour to for example moving from black jeans to blue jeans. These blue acid wash mom jeans* from Yours are still dark but they inject a good amount of colour into them to make a step in the right direction.
If colour really does scare you may try changing up your shoes, or accessories to incorporate a bit of colour first.
I’ve always been a fan of layering. I’m the type of person who will go out with a cardigan or jacket on in the middle of summer because I don’t like how the top of my arms look. But with layering you can add just a bit of colour without feeling like your whole outfit has changed. For me oversized shirts make a good addition and this sage green shirt* from Yours adds the colour I need.
This one is so important, go for styles you know and love. Changing things up and wearing colour is different enough without throwing in a new style that you don’t love. If you love wearing smock dresses pick a colourful smock. If you hate ruffles and big sleeves then steer clear of them whatever the colour.
By changing up just one part of the outfit you should feel more comfortable. For me that’s generally skinny or slim jeans and a short sleeved top.
You may find it easier to go for a more diluted colour than a saturated bright colour to begin with. But the most important thing is to choose a colour that you like and makes you happy. That way when you see yourself in the mirror it should make you smile. For me that colour is pink, so this gingham shirred vest top* is a great addition to my wardrobe as makes me smile whenever I wear it.
If you’re not sure what makes you happy try wearing a few different colours around the house and see how you feel. Generally yellow is seen as a happy sunshine colour, but it’s not for everyone. Whereas blue tends to be quite a universal colour, so this may be a good place to start.
After you’ve started to experiment with adding a few coloured items into your wardrobe it’s time to push out of your comfort zone. You won’t know how you feel about something without trying it so nows the time to go all out. Pick a brightly coloured power suit, or a tie dye dress which features every colour. For me something like this multicolour ditsy print midi dress* does the trick.

I love this. I’ve always been a big fan of color in wardrobe. Why be boring when you can be full of color!
That’s what I’ve been thinking more recently x
The choice of colors in clothing makes a difference.
I really love the idea of adding more color in, but always struggle. This post is really helpful, thank you for sharing.
I must admit I tend to stick to dark colours and have a simple wardrobe.A little colour addition can be nice sometimes. I think a little at a time might work for me.
Yeah my wardrobe used to be a lot of dark colours but it’s slowly changing x
I like adding more color to my wardrobe as the season warms up. Such a nice spring look that is pretty yet still casual!
I think it is important to step out of your comfort zone. I haven’t done it for clothes though.
I love adding a pop of color to an outfit and I appreciate this informative post 😉 It makes me feel good to dress nice and when I feel good I can do lots of good 😉
Great tips! I am SO into colour right now. I love the idea of dopamine dressing and how good wearing colour makes you feel.
Yeah colourful clothing makes me feel happier as well x
I love looking at people wearing bright cololurs but I seldom pick clothes like that. I guess layering helps to add some colour to the current wardrobe, will be looking to do that
For the summer especially it’s good to be a little more adventurous with your colour palette. During the pandemic many of us spent loads of time at home and perhaps lost a bit of confidence as a result. Now is the time to get out there again and start wearing some eye-catching colours!
I too stick to shades of blue in my wardrobe but in the summer I have been trying to add a touch of colour by layering. Its a great way to introduce colour to your wardrobe. I love your tips and ideas.
Like you I always went for black, now I love colour especially in the summer months. If unsure still add accessories such as handbags one of my favourites is an orange bag which is instant colour
Looking great with colour! I’m a bit of a mood colour wearer. I have a little black in the wardrobe because while I love it, I don’t look good in it. I love reds, blues, pinks. Softer summery colours.
