Three Special Things To Do This Summer

July 13, 2022

We’ve had some lovely summery days over the past few months so I bet now this post is live the weather will turn. But hopefully we’ve still got some sunshine ahead of us. And there are plenty of things to do this summer. I know my bucket list is always growing, and this reminds me that I’ve not done an updated one in a while.

If you’ve got kids your summer plans may be filled up with day trips and semi educational visits. But if you’re looking for some fun things to do this summer look no further.

Things to do this summer- Climb the O2

The O2 arena in London is absolutely huge and such an iconic image of the city. But did you know you can climb over it?! I did this four years ago and the memory of doing it still hangs over me. The O2 Arena climb is such an amazing experience and the views from the top are incredible.

You start by watching a safety visit, getting the correct grippy shoes and harnessing up. Then you walk your way up the bouncy material. There are no stairs so you don’t really realise quite how far you’ve climbed until you reach the top and are greeted with the views. You can choose to go up during the daytime which is what I did, for sunset or during the night to see London twinkling below you.

Kids can climb as long as they’re over 8 years old and at least 1.2m tall. Children under 18 also need an adult present with them (the ratio depends on age), but check out the FAQ’s here.

Learn to cook some of your favourite Italian dishes

I will admit I’m not the best cook, but generally I’m pretty good at following recipes. In our household Italian is probably our favourite cuisine and we absolutely love cooking pasta, but we’re stuck with the same recipes. And that’s where The Pasta Studio by Alessandra comes in.

Alessandra brings her experience and Sicilian heritage straight into your kitchen with her cooking masterclasses focusing on handmade pasta. She trained as a professional Pasta Maker in Italy, Padua and Bologna before launching her own pasta venture. I have been completing the Taste of Italy course which covers eight recipes from eight different regions in Italy.

The course itself is really easy to follow as you get an introduction on each region/ dish in a short video. And then you get a video around 6-8 minutes long showing you how to make it with some really great hints and tips as you go. If you’re cooking along with the video you can pause and start it as you’re going.

Alessandra even offers in person cooking classes if you ever happen to be in the Southern part of Sicily. You can find Alessandra on Instagram, or sign up for a course here.

Things to do this summer- Go to a festival

There are always so many festivals on throughout the summer months that there’s something for everyone. I’ve just come back from a few nights camping just outside of Cheltenham at 2000 trees. But there are plenty of day festivals all across London if camping doesn’t appeal to you.

There’s something special about being outside (hopefully in the sunshine) and watching live music with thousands of other people. In my opinion it’s one of the best ways to experience music. Check out this list of some of the best London festivals taking place over the next 6 weeks.

What are you up to this summer?

We do go on a lot of vacations through the summer, but don’t do day trips in our city as often as we should. I never heard of climbing to O2 but it looks like fun! We will have to wait a year, though, since my younger son is only 7.

Living in Italy all we eat is Italian food! So, I would like to go to a festival. I’m still worried about Covid so would stay far from others.
